i'm preparing for a trip out to the UK for three months next year. it will run through the months of june-august. i plan on concentrating to only a handful of areas during the three months, to dedicate more time to each area. what are the camping rules in the UK? i plan to backpack a lot and tent up for the night, especially near the crags. what are the rules about that?

depends where your going.
most of the crags are in the national parks ans so camping is at proper campsites. if they arent in the parks then they are on private land. guess you could try taking it up with the land owner to see if they mind.
the more mountainous areas (lake district, highlands etc) you can get away with wild camping, but you will have to get well out of the valleys.
to be honest though, vast majority of the time its better to camp at the sites. they are closer to the pub and most are still within walking distance of the crags.

for now i am pretty certain that i will be heading to pembroke and dorset. i'm definetly heading to the peak district, but can;t seem to find where in the peak district to go. i only ask because camping off of the cliffs in pembroke would be really cool. the ocean, the climbs, i just thought it would be a good idea. what you think?

pembroke is all MOD land. not a chance of staying anywhere outside of offical sites. Due to this there are times you cannot even climb on the cliffs.

as for dorset, havent been there since i was a kid so have no idea really.
the peak is in a national park so if the rnagers find you trying to wild camp you will be moved on. i dont know if they still do but the fox house pub (near sheffield) used to let climbers camp in its grounds on the cheap. there you are about 15 min walk from 5 or 6 different crags. if not hathersage has at least one campsite but it is small and so there may not be a website or anything.

Endorse all gritstoner says. As for Dorset there is no camping on Portland, but you may get away with wild camping at The Cuttings if you are discreet, otherwise you will need a site in Weymouth, anywhere else you can forget it.
Good sites at Swanage, recommend Toms Field.

You can walk to some of the crags from there.

hi toms field is definately worth going to, but you can wild camp at some of the sport climbing quarrys in dorset, you can also wild camp in some of the car parks. In penbroke I belive you need to go to campsites but there are some cheap ones close to the climbing. I live in Devon (uk) but trvelling in us for the next week, if you want to hook up when you're over you can contact me at oz@mogonthemove.com
I can probably get more info if you need it when i get back to the uk.
hope you have a good trip.

Very useful if you want to read several threads on what ice axes to buy or why you shouldn't bolt grit.
