Yes, totally. I've only found a few sites that have good clips on it. It would make the site sooo much better.

But like you can improve on perfection

Well, I'm sure Trevor's more than happy to accept donations to help cover the increase in bandwidth usage that this would cause.

I know what happens on a moderately popular site when you forget to resize your 1024x768 .jpg's.. I'd hate to see what happens if we stuck videos on here...

I think thats a really good idea and just as the topic is up what about short clips or links in or profile of ourselves climbing.

We could even set up a thing on the site for funny clips sad clips and cool one you no something like that just to show people the problems we have and some funny things that happen to ous when climbing cause there are some.

i think that videos would be awesome. I'm not saying that i don't enjoy the pictures posted, but i think that videos would be so much more entertaining. plus we can learn from other people's styles and check out other peoples road trips to see if we would like to go there also

It seems people didn't "get" my underlying cynicism..

The blunt point is "WE CAN NOT AFFORD TO DO THIS." - or, I can't imagine Trev wanting to try to do this, due to the increase in bandwidth cost that it would cause.

Ummm, you realize that video is a bandwidth sucker, don't you?

You'd be interested in paying membership dues for this? Because that's what it would probably come to. I do high-end video hosting (we concurrently broadcast to satellite and sell feeds to some of the largest television networks on the planet) and I can tell you from experience that even small, low-bit-rate clips can murder your uplinks if they're popular enough.

Case in point: for one particular broadcast last year, we saturated two DS-3's completely with only a few thousand viewers.

And we charge, a LOT, for this service. It isn't cheap to provide that fat of a pipe (we have an OC-12 trunk in our datacenter which we channelize into multiple DS-3's as needed).

For reference, a DS-3 is equivalent to 44.1 megabits per second peak. If you pushed that (95th percentile) at a colocation center (webair.net, say) it would likely cost you $20000 (minimum, assuming you aggressively negotiate bandwidth) that month.

It doesn't cost us $20k/month for a DS-3 but it sure isn't cheap. I shudder to think what it would cost at a colo like Trevor's.

Bottom line, "would be nice" is very different from "is economically feasible".
