I have recently been diappointed with the way this site has been operated. In earlier days in the history of RC.com, this site claimbed to be a 'climbing community' and it stood up to it's word. People could chat & e-mail and just plain interact with each other for FREE. Being a member of a community does not require people to pay for interaction, (e-mail). Also, in most cases a community gets more efficient, but in the case of chat, things have been more complicated. Has anyone else noticed these same things?

P.S. I understand that a site can not always run for FREE, but why did it start one way and then change to be less "community like"?

Also, it would have been nice to have been notified about this change in the way e-mail was going to be run, BEFORE I was billed $10 to use it.

*Never* has it been suggested that communities as-such should be free. Take country clubs. Do you ever hear anyone whining that they have to pay to be a member of a country club?
What makes you feel that you deserve access to everything on this site for free?
As for the e-mail....You *have* been warned. It doesn't cost $10....It will in thirty days. That's a far cry from being billed without notice.

Sigh.

You know, it's _really_ sad when people start dreaming up their own reasons and excuses for why things are the way they are.

rc.com _will_ remain free, you won't have to pay to be a member, you won't have to pay to read the forums, you won't have to pay to view the route database, you won't have to pay to read the (excellent)( articles..

However, I'd expect Trevor (as he just did) to sell add-on "premium services" (such as rc.com email), to those who feel they need/want/can afford to have those features/services.

I for one, don't think $10/year is unreasonable for rc.com email. I run my own servers on the internet, and I can attest to the fact that it's not a cheap thing to do (It's personally costing me $450/month, with no income to show for it.) - and, if one's to keep things afloat, then one has to find some ways to help subsidize the cost of the site.

Would you rather rc.com went away? Trevor always has that option - he could just shut the site down - it would save him both money (now that he's got a kid to take care of), and probably many nights of headaches/little sleep.

A few months ago, Trevor rallied for donations to rc.com - as far as I saw, he got some, but not nearly as much as he (maybe should) have had.. I've donated money, and I'll donate money again - some of us don't mind donating money to a good cause.

I'll end this semi-rant for now, have a good day...

- d.

I remember a while back, I read that you could host a website on your static IP address. This would require a cable modem (or something like it) that has a static IP (stays the same). By using that you can host all the files directly from your computer, so you wouldn't really have to worry about band-width with your site host, you would just have to worry about it filling up your computer. I don't quite remember where I was trying to go with this, but it might be something to look into.

Maxx...with a site this large that can't even be thought of as an option.

Every broadband internet provider I know caps upstream transfer at a pathetic percentage possible JUST to stop your idea from happening.

What are examples of other member only services other than email? I think it's a great way to raise money.

IF YOU WANT FREE EMAIL, GET A f---ING HOTMAIL ACCOUNT!!

Quit bitching about trevor charging for email. There are plenty of email servers out there for free. Let's try to keep trevor's cost down and keep the forums and PM's free.

TRADitionally yours,

Advertisers want to see big daily hit counts and high click through rates. The more people we have coming here, the more attractive we are to advertisers. This also means we need more bandwidth to feed the new visitors. Then we need more advertisers to cover the bandwidth. See where this is going?
The climbing community is still far from mainstream and specialized companies like Black Diamond and Prana are still wary of spending a lot of advertising money on the net when a large percentage of their target audience is out climbing rather than on the computer.

Also, I haven't checked it in a while but we have a rather poor click through rate. People who visit the site just aren't clicking the banners enough and this is one of the factors that potential advertisers look at.

Russman did some stellar work hunting for new advertisers but it's hard to hook them on our site. I guess if you have any connections to local companies and want to help out rockclimbing.com then let them know about the great advertising opportunities to be had here

Plus there's a limit as to how many ads we can place on the site, we don't want this to turn into AOL

I will post this again....IF anyone knows the Professionals of any major company personally and on a first name basis...and is not afraid to let us "use" your name and your connections...let me or Trevor or Jared know and we will "use" you to gain advertising potential...otherwise....well, I have said it before...

See Ya The Russman
