Is there any way of changing it so that the Minimize function can be at the forum level instead of the group level? now: Climbing Information [-] My thought: General [-] Beginner [-] Gear [-] This would streamline things alot better and allow for easier browsing and posting without having to kill the whole group.. just the pieces you don't need. I don't need to see the full bar about West Coast, South West, Mexico, Europe etc.. it's just clutter that could be slimmed down.

If your suggestion is to show the thread titles "expanded" under each forum title... well, I am not aware of an easy way to do that with our forum software. DDT

nono.. i'm trying to minimize unused forums instead of having to close down whole groups of forums.. like i use the East coast forum all the time.. but never use the other partner forums.. so i'd like to keep East open but close down West, south, Midwest etc .. can always open them if i'm going on a trip but for daily use keep them closed up This is what we can do now..
what i'm thinking (yellow is ok... green is goood..) i made the buttons big for easy viewing :)

So clicking on the [-] next to a forum name would make it "disappear"? Still not sure I understand it. The expand/collapse [+/-] paradigm normally is used to expand or collapse sub-categeories UNDER the item, not the item itself. Maybe I'm just confused about what you're suggesting... perhaps I need more majid annotations. DDT

oyyyy.. come on daniel you can do this... (i feel like Chef Ramsay on Hells kitchen) i want to be able to collapse the ITEMS aka FORUMS under the Categories without having to do the whole category basically put a [-] next to all each forum (General, beginner, gear, trip reports, etc etc etc) so it can be controlled individually instead of 4-5 of them at a time.. this way you can keep 1 of them open i you want but close the others that you don't need. they won't disappear.. just be a single bar like the categories look now i'm not drawing any more pictures..

DDT- he just wants to be able to collapse the items to a single line, the title line. he wants the descriptions, ect, underneath it to go away so he doesnt have to scroll so far, and it makes the page look neater?

Probably no scrolling at all... for me i'd have General, Gear, Sport Climbing, East Coast, Community open and have everything else title lines to be opened up if needed but closed for most of the time since i don't look at those forums hardly at all.

How much demand is there for this? It would be a bitch, but I could incorporate it into Tweak, if enough people wanted it. Personally, I almost never visit the main forum page. I rely instead on the Recent Posts and My Topics pages. Jay

I would think it wouldn't be too hard to do through RC.com since they already have the ability to do it with a group of forums i don't see why it couldn't be done on an individual basis.. but if not then we could see what you'd come up with...

Ah, now I understand. A bit slow I'll confess. Unfortunately this is not trivial for me with our software. Jay's greasemonkey magic may be your best bet. DDT

Ah, now I understand. A bit slow I'll confess. Unfortunately this is not trivial for me with our software. Jay's greasemonkey magic may be your best bet. I can see two ways to do this. The first is what Jake suggested. Add a toggle control to each forum that optionally hides all but the first line in each row of the table. This should be straightforward to code. But, my guess is that most people would only collapse a few table rows, and so the page length would still exceed one screen, and the user would still have to scroll. I think I have a second option that would involve more coding, but might be more useful. First of all, the Threads and Posts columns don't provide information that is important to most users. They do indicate when there are new posts in a forum, but that is also indicated by the color of the folder icon next to each forum title. So we can eliminate the Threads and Posts columns entirely, as well as the forum descriptions. This frees up a lot of horizontal space, allowing us to display information in the Last Post column in three separate columns: Title, Date, and Poster. This would allow each forum to be displayed in a single row, and should make the table short enough to fit within one screen, without loss of information that might be important to an experienced user. So, the table columns would be: Forum Name (with icon indicating new posts) Last Post Title, Last Post Date, and Last Post Username. This format would, of course, be offered as an optional alternative to the standard format. What do you think of this approach? Jay

well.. i like my idea because that's what would be useful to me.. i only visit a handful of forums so i'd be collapsing almost all of them and would be viewable on one screen... i have the International and Clubs categories collapsed now and i'd like to close more but can't since forums i do use are included in those categories. being able to see info on the new posts is useful.. and i like that.. it does not solve the issue i have with forums i don't read taking up space.

Jay I'm liking where you're headed with that thought Jay, look forward to some iteration of it being implemented into the next Tweaks build for sure. I don't need to know who posted what when to the last post in a certain thread (only that there's a new post), and doing away with that information would certainly minimize the space a forum takes up. Doing away with the forum description certainly wouldn't deprive any of the more experienced users of any functionality either... certainly the title is enough to know what to expect. I'll look forward to seeing what your next beta version of Tweaks looks like.
