About Lukenya:

Lukenya is the Kenya climbing scene's favourite weekend crag. The cliffs are located on land owned by the Mountain Club of Kenya --you must join to climb there. Daily membership costs $2.50 and temporary membership costs $20 and lasts for three months. The area was visited by Halford Mackinder in 1899 on his way up to make the first ascent of Mt. Kenya. He did not see the climbing potential; instead, he shot a rhino! It became popular in the 1930's and the Club has interesting archival film material from early days on the crag. In the 1950's the area received more intensive development and towards the end of the 1960's some hard climbs were put up by locals on Edinburgh Castle, the prominenet prow at the end of the hill making up the site. In the 1980's more hard routes were added and some bolted lines put up. Recently, Lukenya has experienced a bit of interest when 'Nemesis' crag was opened. Lukenya is 70 years old and still going strong. Grading: a mixture of British (older routes) and Australian grades are used at the crag. The move is towards using Australian grades, in line with the rest of the southern hemisphere. Good quality routes of all grades are available at Lukenya. Guide books are available at the Mountain Club. The Nairobi area has brilliant weather -all year round! A rainy day is very unlucky!
