About Akaiwa Seigankyo:

This area is a really popular Sport climbing area in Hokkaido. It is about 2 hours from Sapporo so attracts many climbers during the summer, esp weekends. There are about 100+ routes here on a series of large boulders. Most routes are moderate to difficult. The rock is red and solid. It can be a very social climbing experience. There are currently (2006) road works that are affecting this area. A new road is very close to the rocks. There are some restictions in place, currently you cannot climb on the boulder closest to the road.
Nearest town or city: Hidaka
Directions: Get to Hidaka and drive to Shimukappu. Don't turn right in Shimukappu, go straight at the intersection and follow the road. Currently (2006) the new tunnel is not operational so you have to turn left on the gravel road. Follow this down to the bridge (take care of big trucks) and park off the road on the other side of the bridge. Walk up the road about 100m and you will find the rocks in the trees.
