About The Pharos:
Okay, this has gotta be the best place to climb at Arapiles. Technically, there's only three areas here, Death Row Pinnacle (the standalone face 100m to the left of the main bit), Uncle Charlie's Pinnacle, which sits in front of the 3rd "area", the Pharos themselves, by the far the most imposing and impressive of Arapiles's satellites. It gets its name from the fact that it looks like one of those massive Ancient Egyptian statues, just a little like the Sphinx, only 100 metres high and with some really good climbing ... Death Row Pinnacle has a couple of gems (Death Row and Birdman Of Alcatraz), while Uncle Charlie's Pinnacle has too many to list, suffice to say it is the home of Punks In The Gym. The main pinnacle though is so big it has been divided up into 4 areas itself. They are ... Front Wall, home of the massive Aftermath roof and the airy Trinity Wall traverse Back Wall, home of many, many classic 2 and 3 pitch routes such as Lamplighter, Judgement Day, Second Coming, Trojan etc. as well as some harder things like Masada. South Face, where you can scare yourself to bits on things like Mind Arthritis and Delerium Tremens. French Crack Area, a small area which actually sits most of the way top the top of the main pinnacle If you had to pick one place to spend the rest of your life climbing, this might just be it. |
