About Transmitter Crag:

One of the best sport crags in the Port Hills. About 40 bolted routes, ranging from 8 to almost 15 meters in height, all with rap-rings at or close to the top of the route. Many of the routes have grunty overhanging starts that then lead to sustained steep finishes. Some of the rock can be a bit loose, but much of it is more solid than it looks. Shaded from most sun and wind by trees close to the cliff, perfect for hot and/or windy days.
Approach: Park at the large gravel parking area west of the Sign of the Kiwi just before Marleys Hill. Walk over the cable and follow the track up the hill past 2 power poles. Drop off the track and head north (down the slope) between the older and younger stands of pine trees (younger to your left, older to your right). Follow this division for about 20 minutes, staying pretty much at the same elevation at all times (cross the gulley). Not the easiest of approaches, but it is not as far as it will probably seem (leave your heavy gear at home).
Approach: Park in large shingle car park on the right hand side 1.0 km west of Sign of the Kiwi. Drop down over the carpark on the north side. Follow the cycle track west for a couple of hundred meters until you cross a wooden bridge. Go down the hill and find a hole in the broom, (Having some loppers is a good idea) move through the broom untill you reach the forest. Follow the older and younger stands of pine trees (younger to your left, older to your right). Follow this division for about 20 minutes, staying pretty much at the same elevation at all times (cross the gulley). Not the easiest of approaches, but it is not as far as it will probably seem (leave your heavy gear at home). Look for bits of material tired to trees.
