About Wanaka - Hospital Flat:

Hospital Flat is the first climbing area you encounter as you drive from Wanaka. Grades range from 14 to 29, spread over five crags. One to look for is the classic 3 pitch ***Turn on, Tune in, Drop out", 17. Most of the climbing around Wanaka occurs in the Matukituki Valley, about 15km from town. None of these crags are on public land. Access is at the discretion and good will of the run-holders. Local climbers have devloped a good relationship with run-holders so don't blow it for them. Rules are sign posted, please observe them. floater: Loads of individual areas/sections on schist rock. Mostly single pitch sport routes. Loads of range in grad and the occasional trad climb. Alot of climbing is concentrated around Hospital Flat just past Glendu Bay. Open flat area with a little car park on the west end of the flat area. Little DOC explanation about the climbing here.
Nearest town or city: Wanaka
Directions: Head for Glendu Bay, turn into Matukituki Valley Rd (look for the Treble Cone Ski area signs). Park at the bottom of the hill by the stock yards or on the other end of the paddock.
