About Steele:
After years of closure due to issues with landowners, Steele was re-opened to climbing in 2009 with the purchase of a section of the cliffline by the Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC). It's important to note that the SCC purchase does not open the entire cliffline, so some sections (including the phenomenal Amphitheater area) are still off-limits. Please respect the SCC boundaries as efforts continue to open more of the cliff.
No camping is allowed on the SCC property; camp at nearby Horsepens. |

Directions: | From I-59 north of Birmingham, take the Steele exit (exit 174) and head northwest on Steele Station Rd. After crossing the railroad tracks, turn left at the dead end and continue south a short distance to CR 42 (marked by signs for Horsepens) and turn right. Continue up 42 for a mile or so until you see chicken houses on the right. Turn right into a gravel driveway and follow this up a steep grade to a lot with a mobile home and a shed. Park here and follow the trail marked with surveyors tape to the cliff. |
