About Eklutna Traverse:

50 mile traverse crossing the Eklutna, Whiteout, Eagle and either the Raven or Milk Glaciers from Eklutna Lake to Girdwood or Vice/Versa. The route is conveniently supplied with 4 huts, 3 maintained by the Mountaineering Club of Alaska, and offers endless opportunities for peak bagging, skiing, ice climbing, and alpine rock. The traverse can be completed year round, but the best weather and glacier conditions occur during the spring and early summer. The highpoint elevation is around 5700 feet and total elevation gain is around 11,000. Weather can be a major limiting factor, so being prepared for extended stays in the huts is a must. Obtain as much beta on hut locations as possible in the event that bad weather moves in during your trip. Glacier travel skills and equipment are mandatory, and travel time in the earlier parts of the year (up through june) is greatly improved on skis. The trip can be completed easily in less than two days if weather and snow conditions allow, but more planning for more days (ideally 4-5) maximizes enjoyment and allows for inclement weather delays. See www.mcak.org for specific hut information (accessible by members only).
