About Pioneer Peak ICE:
The obvious, beautiful, triangular peak visible from anywhere in the Matanuska/Susitna Valley. A trail leads up the northeast side, but numerous alpine and ice climbs ascend its other flanks. Very high avalanche danger after snowstorms because of its constant exposure to high winds. If the Eklutna Canyon parking lot is a little too crowded, you can always head here for THE BEER CLIMBS, a couple of nice ice routes on the lower flanks. A good eye can spot several of the ice routes from the road. |
