About El Cap Canyon:
El Cap Canyon was a mystery crag for many years. I remember in 96 when climbers talked about the place like they have been training to climb there there whole lives. Finally in 98 after a trip to Vegas I uncovered some directions from an old time climbing legend from our state. El Cap Canyon consists of 4 major area's and is hardly tapped of it's bolted potential with it's 64 routes to date. Climbing season stretches from September to July. The rock is a Desert Limestone that has seen less natural erosion than most. |

Directions: | This Crag is located about 17 miles south on Hwy 77 from Globe to Tucson. Parking can be an issue here but there are a few alternatives. The first parking is uphill on the side of the Hwy at the mouth of the canyon. The walk is longer but more Flat. Next is at the barbwire gate a bit further down the road on the east side. Parking here is good and less visable but be sure to close all gates to help keep cattle safe. Next is a pull out a bit further down that stretches behind a hill. The first gate is usually open and a quick desent down the hill puts you at the canyon floor. Routes are up the canyon from this approach. Reccomend camping at the nearby Drip or Homestead for this Crag. |
