About Crystal Basin:

Many 1-3 pitch trad climbs sprinkled on many granite and basalt formations throughout this large area. A good concentration of routes (11 routes) ranging in difficulty from 5.7-5.11a is found on Basalt Bluff south of Loon Lake, a mile NE of the Wentworth Springs/Loon Lake Road junction. Some fine quality granite is found above Lyons Lake near the Sierra Crest, many routes were done in the late 70s and 80s by Placerville locals. About 16 routes. Several good granite routes (5 routes) are found on the bluff east of the Loon Lake Road, just as you top the open grade up to the lake. More routes (6 routes) on the east end of Loon Lake above the intake tunnel on the high slab formation (5.8 face) and the bluff immediately above the tunnel. Several mile walk involved. Slick Rock has 6 or so friction routes on the obvious S face, though the bolts are old 1/4" and routes become very easy after the first pitch. Good bouldering around the entrance and above the campground across the road from Ice House Store.
