About Ellery Lake:

Although the "Speed of Life" crack (5.11b) is a well-known classic thanks to the Reid & Falkenstein Tuolumne Guide (3rd. ed., 1992), there are also many TRs and a few short classic leads scattered above and below the old mining road running due east along a contour line extending across the granite-covered hillside from the south end of Ellery Lake Dam. The Squealer Slab, for example, is a fine out-of-the-way venue with excellent views of Lee Vining Canyon situated in a meadow filled with wildflowers. The First Cliff Band Below the Mining Road also has a number of short crack leads, including the spectacular "Hidden Persuasion" arete (5.10d) and the well-defined dihedral, "Demonology" (5.10b).
Nearest town or city: Tuolumne Meadows
Directions: Drive east from Tuolumne Meadows over Tioga Pass and out of YSNP about 3 miles. Park along the Tioga Pass Road (US 120) in one of the large pullouts on the N. side of the Ellery Lake Dam, walk across it, and then either angle up the talus slope and right to the base of "Speed of Life" or else walk out the abandoned mining road about a half mile until you come to Spillway Crag with the "Gold Mind" (5.9) crack. Starting from this point, climbs can be found on individual cliff bands above or below the Mining Road. The Squealer Slab is located across rolling meadows down and to the east about a half mile.
