Mt. Watkins - East Face
About Mt. Watkins - East Face:
So far, there are only two routes on the huge East Face of Mt. Watkins: "Golden Dawn" IV 5.10d and "Escape From Freedom" V/VI 5.12c. Approach: The East Face of Mt. Watkins is probably best approached from where the Snow Creek trail crosses the Tioga Rd. (US 120). Follow the trail about 3 miles and continue to the back of YaSoo Dome. From here walk due west until you reach the gulley that descends where the East Face abutts against a giant ridge. Third-class down a hundred yards (or rappel from a large pine) until you reach the Rabbit Ear Boulders with new double bolt anchors. Now rappel and scramble down about 700 feet until it is possible to tension rappel across slabs to the ledge systems at the base of the East Face of Watkins. Several hundred feet of brush scrambling will bring you a large pine where the "Golden Dawn" begins. Three hundred more yards of hideous manzanita and clifflets leads to the start of "Escape From Freedom" V/VI 5.12c where a large sandpit provides a convenient bivy. |
