Devonian Wall
About Devonian Wall:
Continue down river from Cerro Gordo Cove about a quarter mile and there will be a wall on the right side of the trail. An Iowa geology dude told me that the area is Devonian carbonate rock. It is called the Shell Rock Formation and consists of three parts (Mason City Substage, Rock Grove Substage, and Nora Substage). The nice face climbing is dolomitic limestone with the top substage called the Mason City. It is harder than the lower 2 substages, exceptional climbing for Iowa. |
