About Sawmill Creek Dome:

Sawmill Creek Dome is in the North Shore No Chalk Zone and is an anthorosite bluff with great views of the surrounding area. Climbs are around 60 feet in hieght and very abrasive; consider good padding for rope, slings, and webbing that may come into contact with the rock. The area is on Lake County land and open to hunters in the fall. Wear blaze orange (or at least bright colors) after Labor Day. In an emergency, dial 911. The closest public phones are in Finland (west 5 miles on Co. Rd. 6) and at the Tettegouche Rest Area on Hwy. 61 (approx. 9 miles). Camping is available at the Tettegouche State Park (reservations suggested), Eckbeck Campground and Finland Campground and also numerous spots in Silver Bay. Allow 30 to 40 minutes for the approach hike from the parking area.
Nearest town or city: Little Marais / Finland
Directions: Take Hwy. 61 north (northeast) of Duluth, through Two Harbors and Silver Bay to Little Marais and take a left (west) on Lake County Road 6. Go a little over a mile and park in the Superior Hiking Trail parking lot (old gravel pit). From the parking lot, hike west on the road for about a third of a mile to the trailhead southbound (do NOT park here, you will be towed). Follow the trail, gaining about 250 vertical feet and come to a ridgeline with northerly views and a small cliff below. The trail then curves southwest and to the base of the summit dome and then climbs steeply to the top. Continue on the trail to a terraced overlook with some good sized pine trees; you are now above "Birch Flakes".
