About Shovel Point:

Shovel Point is in the NO Chalk Zone and is a bit tamer than Palisade Head. There are frequently MANY tourists here so please be aware and take proper precautions. Also, many guided groups suck up the moderate routes, so you may need to arrive early to get the line you want, or wait in line. There are only 25 listed climbs in the guide book and I have split them into two groups here. The Western section will be west and closer to the parking lot. The Eastern section will be east and closer to the "Point" and the lake. Any fixed pins found on this cliff system are likley to be very old. Do not rely solely on them. Consider padding sharp edges. The ryolite of Palisade Head and Shovel Point is capable of "eating" ropes. In case of emergency, call 911 or contact the Tettegouche State Park Office. The nearest phone is in the parking lot.
Nearest town or city: Silver Bay
Directions: Take Hwy. 61 north from Duluth, through Two Harbors to the stop light in Silver Bay. Continue about 4.5 miles past the light to the rest area at the entrance to Tettegouche State Park. The best parking spot is the far south-west area of the lot. Hike toward the lake and catch the "well signed" path to Shovel Point. Come to and climb a set of stairs to the observation platform which serves as the starting area for locating the Western routes.
