About Barkeater Cliffs:

Legend has it that the Iroquios Indians referred to the Algonquins as the "Adirondaks" or "barkeaters" because they were forced to live off bark and buds of maple trees to survive the harsh winters. These cliffs formerly called Pitchoff Northeast Cliffs took on the name Barkeater Cliffs (after the Bark Eater Inn at the foot of the road). The approach takes about 20 minutes and begins off route 73 just uphill from the town of Keene.Drive past the Bark Eater Inn and cross country ski center to the end of Alstead Hill Rd. about 2.5 miles beyond. Park at Adirondack Rock and River Guide Service. Hike the Jack Rabbit ski trail for less than a mile to a cairn on your left, just past a wide wooden bridge. From here the path crosses a brook and heads up hill to the boulder field.
