About Hunters:
This place is quite possibly one of the best sections of bouldering in PA, maybe the east coast. There are an endless array of problems here, from V0 on up. The rock is yummy sandstone, super friction-licious. Most of this area lies in a state game lands area, that runs along a section of Stone Mountain. It borders on the Rocky Ridge Natural Area. There ia a small section of of the land that is owned by a private owner who does not allow tresspassing. Dont climb in this private section. The public part however, is MAMMOTH when compared to the private spot, so there is nothing to fret. Plenty of climbing to go around for everyone. For the most part, just when you come to the top of the trail where you can see the first boulders, the private section follows a small trail that breaks off to the left and the public is everything else not along that small trail and everything to the right and along the ridge. This area has seen years of active development. Climbers have been developing problems here since the 1950's, making this area one of the oldest and most historic climbing areas in the East. Some of the climbers who frequented this spot from the late 60's to 1980's are world renown climbers in fact. Unfortunatly a lot of the first ascent classics done by climbers in the early years had the true names of these classics changed in the 90's. Reguardless the place has fantastic bouldering and numerous routes still await being developed in mass amount of rock Hunters is famed for. |

Directions: | Update from Mackavus (3/22/06): To those of you looking for directions to this area, please see below. Since this area does in fact, have access issues attached to it, I will not be giving out directions. To those who were part of the thread/flame festival almost two years ago, I get it now. Its cool. After moving to Colorado over a year ago and climbing more extensively, I have a far better understanding of the issue. Peace. You should make friends with a local on this one. Alternatively, ask any central PA climber, they should be able to provide you with directions (Thats not saying they will). |
