About The ClamShell:

The Clamshell is the chunk of rock that sits behind the snowfence at the upper bi-pass road stop sign (sort of across from the Peruvian Lodge).Park at the pullout on the left right when you get into Alta just on the other side of the Hellgate avalanche barricades, this is vital in keeping good relationship with local authority.Greg Martinez, Aaron Weaver, Luke Douglas and some other monkeys and I cleaned and bolted this south facing crag in the summer of 2003 ( for those who were in SLC it was a scorcher). It features short easier climbs, to 110' pump fests. This area needs to be treated kindly, please stay on the designated trails, the fraigle mountain slopes erode very easily. As always with the Hellgate area wear a Goddang helmut, there are often goats above the crag. A 60 meter rope will work on most routes but longer ones like Altatraz and Septic Death, Devils Advocate a 70m is a must if lowering, or two ropes. A 50 will work on some, just bring a 60 if you have it, or a 70 for the long dogs.
