Eagle Rock
About Eagle Rock:
Just over 2 miles into the canyon, an Oriskany sandstone formation soars up from the river to your right as you descend the hill beyond the water plant. Welcome to Eagle Rock, one of the biggest privately-owned chunks of climber-friendly stone in West Virginia. Climbers are encouraged to contact the landowners in advance and to offer to pay the ridiculously low $10 PER SITE camping fee for the righteous thrill of climbing this amazing formation. Call 304-257-4614, and after you come down, you can just cross the river and pitch camp. conditions are pretty rustic... bring a trowel and get ready to hike off into the woods if the single outhouse is occupied or "out of service" from overuse. |
Approach: | Turn off Rte 220 onto Smoke Hole road, and follow for 2.2 miles. Turn sharply right off Smoke Hole Rd into Eagle Rock Campground at obvious giant fin, opposite historic sign and gravesite. Park off the driveway, cross river. |
