The leader in the fatal "Darkside"incident http://www.rockclimbing.com/..._reply;so=ASC;mh=25; made a decision similar to what you described. It seems to be a combination of poor technique and mis-placed trust that results in the more serious accidents. I know what it is to have the bug to climb so bad that I will do almost anything to get on the rock, but in some ways, soloing seems like a better option than involving someone else resulting in a false sence of security. At least the risks are better defined when I am soloing... not that I encourage that, but it involves more calculated thought, which I do advocate.
