In light of the enthusiasm shown this last weekend for the Cinco de Mayo celebration at Shelf (unfortunately I couldn't go) I thought I'd kick off the planning for the Third Annual Shelf Road Gathering. September 8 -10 will be the dates so clear your calendars and plan to attend. I imagine there will be another breakfast feast to look forward to  !

waaaah, I'm probably out of the picture for this. waaaaahhh. Rumor has it my presence is required in Hawaii at that time for a wedding party. Of course I'll have the opportunity to play lots of golf, see a live volcano, expose my pasty skin to the tropics, eat fresh pineapple until my digestive system sends up a white flag, and check out the tropical beach action. And when the new Mr. & Mrs. do, well, Mr. & Mrs. things, I'll have the opportunity to play even more golf. It won't be Shelf Road, but it will be my first time in Hawaii. Have fun at the breakfast binge.

after nearly four months of not posting…i guess it’s like riding a bike, huh? anyway, many thanks to jeff for getting the ball rolling (and lisa for the prodding). as life typically is, many things (money, marathon training runs, money, work schedule, money, etc.) have come together to make it kind of difficult to make my annual september trip. but it appears now that I can squeeze in a short trip. f.w.i.w. -- i hope to fly in sometime friday the 8th. get a ride down to shelf from one of my generous friends. climb saturday and sunday. i would hope to have a little soiree at southern sun on monday night the 11th before flying out on tuesday. i won't be able to party quite as hard since the shindig will be 3 weeks prior to my next marathon, but don't let that dissuade you from showing up... hawaii may be the only acceptable excuse for not showing up... regards r.r.

Reno is the short dude who is losing his hair. Weights around 250. Kinda speaks in a squeaky voice, likes poetry, but yet somehow pulls the ladies.. Ya can't miss him......:) I guess what Im saying is look for the guy who looks like Mike Tyson who is wearing a harness.

Climbing at Shelf and climbing in the Black..... its all good!!!! And Angry, I'll climb with you in the Black  Maybe we should plan a follow up event in the Black for those so inclined. Good time of the year for there, lots on my tic list to do. I'd be up for 3 - 5 days following the Shelf Shindig.

I feel dirty just for having watched that video. I was in constant fear that "shakira's" skirt was going to fall off. ...but of COURSE I'll be bringing the "goods". After all..isn't that my ultimate role here? (1) Choose material most likely to elicit memorable behavior (2) Do not partake is said behavior...but have camera handy (3) Take all whining, blaming and blasphemous comments regarding said material with a grain of salt (and lime..or whatever) I'm in!

“Now tequila may be the favoured beverage of outlaws but that doesn't mean it gives them preferential treatment. In fact, tequila probably has betrayed as many outlaws as has the central nervous system and dissatisfied wives. Tequila, scorpion honey, harsh dew of the doglands, essence of Aztec, crema de cacti; tequila, oily and thermal like the sun in solution; tequila, liquid geometry of passion; Tequila, the buzzard god who copulates in midair with the ascending souls of dying virgins; tequila, firebug in the house of good taste; O tequila, savage water of sorcery, what confusion and mischief your sly, rebellious drops do generate!” -Tom Robbins Seems Tom and I share a deep and dirty philosopy for life, but a deep reverence for tequila. See you all there. We'll miss you Reno.

Ron, you can call my missus, and tell her in no uncertain terms that I'm going to be to busy climbing to visit her family in DC, and that SHE will have to provide the entertainment for my parents and hers. G'head.... I double-dog-dare you. ;)

Corn tortillas, pico de gallo, cheese, bacon or sausage, that should do it. Those eggs benedict were awesome. And what will you be drinking in the evening, Jeff? Perhaps we can make sure you don't run out of it. Definitely going to miss you, Reno. Arrrrrrrrghhh!

In reply to: In reply to: Bringing the Captain Morgan? (The front rangers that hang in Dream Canyon will know what I'm talking about). Innocent choice of words? Crafty innuendo? You be the judge. (And I still chuckle at Captain Morgan adds.) I wish I was soo smart! Totally innocent innuendo. Thanks for the laugh Brad.

In reply to: I took Friday off so I can get the full "Shelf experience". Excellent.
In reply to: What supplies should I bring? Bring a lot of water, and I mean a lot. Bring more than what you think you need, minimum is about 2 gallons per day. I know that when I'm at shelf I guzzle about a gallon every 3-4 hours while climbing, so I need more than the minimum. Bring the usual, tent, pad, bag, food, 12 quickdraws or so.
In reply to: Are there bathroom facilities onsite? Aye, but bring TP.
In reply to: Also, where exactly is the campground? A street address would be outstanding. The campground is right next to the cliffs. Literally next to them. Directions: Find your way to Canon City. Go north on field ave From 50 Keep going straight till you hit a T, make a right onto red canyon road Stay on the main road, it eventually comes to shelf road. The Campground is sand gulch, it's on the left immediately before a Y. You'll know you passed the campground if you start going on the shelf part of shelf road, you'll see a wall on your left and a dropoff on your right, don't try and turn around until you find a pulloff.

I am going down on Friday, probably around noon or so. I have to swing through Boulder to pick up some resoled shoes, so picking people up would not be out of my way. I have a van and can probably fit 3 passengers + gear comfortably.

I'm so excited to be climbing at Shelf this weekend! I've been sidelined by a pesky injury for months now, and I'm so psyched to get back on the rock and then hang out around the campfire drinking beer with you all. I'm planning to drive down Saturday afternoon/evening. Rumor has it that Mike Wells is coming too. :D

For all the peeps asking how to recognize this group, just look for Lucille. She's my POS RV (1975 Dodge) and is the best climber RV on the planet. We should arrive sometime early afternoon on Friday. Whoever gets to the Sand Gulch campground first, try and get the big group campsite at the very end. http://i11.photobucket.com/...bers2005/Lucille.jpg

I'll be leaving sometime around noon on Friday. I can offer a ride down, but am not yet sure on when I'm coming back up to Denver, so I wouldn't count on me for that. If anyone is going to be around Friday afternoon and wants to rope up, I'll be in the red Accord with Virginia plates. Joe

I'm not saying don't bring your kids, but you might want to start practising the "earmuffs" a la Wedding Crashers. There will be alot of drinking, puking and probably some nakedness. There tend to be whole tables around us of pale parents with jaws on the floor whenever we get together after climbing. http://www.fullblownminis.com/...ages/Jaw_Drop_x2.jpg

Yeah, Jer, I've got some earmuffs for you. Corks from wine bottles work nicely. White wine works best. The red wine can stain the outside of the ear and tends to make one look slightly rabid. This is going to be fun. I feel hungover already! O, wait.... you said earmuffs, not earplugs. I swear I'm not hungover yet.

We didn't go down on account of the weather forecast and went to 11-Mile instead, where rains and hail vexed us all Sunday on and off. Did you have the same weather? I assume that you guys dealt with such weather appropriately? http://www.duncancumming.co.uk/photos/drunk.jpg

Hey, I was at the Shelf Road gathering (I was the guy with the big camera.) Mark and I just got to an internet cafe at Grand Junction and during the drive I went through the pics and picked out some good ones, you can see them here - http://jmaug.com/~banshee/shelf/ If anyone wants a full sized version of any pics of themselves for printing just PM me and I'll e-mail you the high res version, although it might take a week or two before I'm online again. Edited to fix the url
