Hey all, serious post in community, for once. As my lovely wife clausti's signature line reads, she is going to be cycling a century (100 mile) ride in August, raising money for cancer research. This is quite personal for both of us. Christina (clausti's real name, now you know!) is currently working on her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics, and is working on a gene in fruit flies that is involved in many human cancers. Lung cancer claimed the lives of both her grandmother and grandfather. Her aunt, only a few weeks ago, underwent surgery to remove a large tumor from her brain's frontal lobe. And my mentor from graduate school, who directed my recently completed American History dissertation, is currently in the middle of a brutal fight with lymphoma. So here's the deal. Click on the links below, and 100% of the money donated will go to cancer research. This is pretty unusual; many other charities have quite a bit of money going to administration and such. You can see Christina's profile and make donations here, and see more background information on the Pelatonia ride here. Sorry about the pseudo-spam; we'll be actively hitting up everyone we know for the minimum of $1500, or if we get to $2,000, she'll ride for two days. Feel free to pass this link on to wherever you want, other sites, family members, personal blogs, whatever. Thanks in advance!

Looking at that pic of Christina and her Grandmother, I bet they would have looked like twins back in the day. They look very similar!

I look just like the pictures of her when she was young, it's true. I'm also named after her. It was really a loss when she passed away; she was a gracious, loving, strong lady. And thanks so much to everyone for your support! I'm honestly, very touched.

If you break the $1,500 limit, I'll throw in some more. I've seen enough baked potatoespatients that I know there is a different solution to cancer treatment.

My loans come in next week and payday next Friday, when those go through, I send some money for this your way... cancer is a nasty thing that has definitely affected my family, on my Dad's side it got my grandfather, and on my mom's side it got both my uncle, and 2/3rds of that grandfather's lung.

Any way to arrange PayPal donations? 100 miles is a looooong damn way. A good cause will help you with the motivation while training and some where around mile 85. Nice job supporting a worthy cause. Ed

Nice job supporting a worthy cause. Ed 100 miles is indeed a long damn way. I think mile 85 is the peanut-butter-nutella mile. pretty sure. In all seriousness, though, I'm kind of psyched that it's going to be something really hard to do. It feels more like a sympathetic 'fight' that way, right? as far as direct paypal donations, not as far as I can see. Though they do have an option for checks, and you print something out to mail in with your check if it's going to a specific rider.

I would guess that Pelotonia won't do paypal directly, because paypal takes a cut and the nonprofit can't issue a tax receipt for that part of the donation? Good for you clausti. I have been affected by cancer also. Some ladies I talked to after doing a 150 for some charity said it helps to keep changing positions on the seat. I know how sore I get with just 10-20 miles. Good luck with the ride.

I'm late to the game- but I just put some $$ in the kitty. Good luck, clausti! I know you can do this! I jsut got off a 65-mile ride for breast cancer research this morning :) The Little Red Riding Hood has become my very favorite event. 2,600 women (ONLY!) riding for breast cancer research! I would have loved to do the 100-miles, but the weather was super sketchy and I didn't have it in me this year, so I settled for a metric century. I very much enjoyed the whole ride. I damn near cried when I rode across the finish line under a huge banner that said "VICTORY OVER CANCER" to all who have suffered or lost someone we love, or both- we can do this!

Just an FYI, unless I added wrong, RC.knob has kicked in $900 so far. Warms the heart, it does.

On a side note, I hope you'll get good weather! A co-worker of mine is going on a 300 km (190mile?) race/run tomorrow, and the forecast calls for rain, 20-25mph winds and temps in the 50-55F region! Poor sods...

I've started to put sunscreen on my forehead. I tried to get a picture of it - the head- as a warning to a fellow short hair person *jack shits pants in rage*. The pictures didn't show it well enough. The air vents in my helmet have it so when I take it off, I look like I'm playing football for the Michigan Wolverines *clausti shits pants in rage*. It's ok for me, cause I like that team *clausti shits pants in rage again*

Interesting.. Good luck, Christina. I'm doing research in colon cancer. None of my relatives died of it. I don't do bicycling. But I need $2700 to purchase 4 lentiviruses from Dharmacon, Inc. for my experiments. And another $4000 to do a ChIP-seq screening. The results of my experiments may or may not cure somebody, but they will expand our understanding of how cancer cells work. Writing NIH grants is very time-consuming and doesn't guarantee funding. Starting a panhandling website that explains what I am doing, where exactly the money go and with the pictures of experimental results with layman-oriented explanations sounds like a good idea to cover at least some small costs.

Just found out my parent's neighbor of 37 years just died this morning from cancer. Liver, they diagnosed it maybe a month ago. She had breast cancer maybe 10 years ago. BUMP.

BUMP! I thought I'd bump this, since at the last minute a colleague of clausti's needed someone to fill in a rider spot in Pelotonia. So now we're both riding! Clausti has already passed her minimum donation requirement (thanks in no small part to all you rc.comers), but on the off chance that someone still wants to donate, here's my profile-- http://www.pelotonia.org/...erName=Paul%20Nelson

Ok y'all. TOMORROW! There was a pretty fun opening ceremony tonight for it. The sick bastard organizers had free booze for all us riders, probably because they all knew that we would only have one drink or less the night before a big ride.

Did a century a few weeks ago. Make sure to eat enough during the ride and keep hydrated. Don't get all excited in the beginning and pace yourself and you'll be fine. have fun :)

Hey all, it went really well. Great event, lots of supportive people, everyone raised about $4 million for cancer research total. More details will follow; we're currently visiting family in Utah, with spotty internet access.

Still waiting on pictures! this is the only picture we have so far: paul forgot to save the picture he took on my phone of me at the top of the last hill. and the finish line photos have a hour gap in them that includes our end time. i had my hands in the air and everything.
