I would like to understand why some people wear beanies.... There are a number of 'boulderers' at my local gym who don't where shirts and traverse around the gym breathing extremely loud. The volume roughly correlates to the number and hotness of the females present. The loud breathing I equate to standard douchbaggery.... What is the origin of this beanie radness? Is there logic behind it or is it just a trend?

And I would like to understand why some dudes wearing beanies in any situation, indoor, outdoor, in bed, at christmas dinner, or whatever, concern you in any way. The origin is very obvious. Bouldering outside, when it is cold, makes a nice snugly knit hat, a.k.a. beanie, a must. It is a strange phenomenon, but you can actually climb shirtless/in a tank top, and wear a hat, and you will be warmer with a hat than without it. Some people get so used to having that beanie on their head, that they can't seem to take it off even indoors. Or maybe they just look better in it, because their hair hasn't been washed for many days. Regardless, you can safely ignore the beanie-wearing guys in the gym, they are not particularly contagious, and rest assured that you don't need to put one on yourself.

Maybe they used to small and shit boulder rooms where there's a lot of chalk in the air, and they dont want that in their hair? The only reasonable answer I could come with.

Same reason baggy pants and later popped collars were everywhere: its trendy, and they think it looks cool.

does everyone with a baseball hat play baseball? Do people need Hummers to go to the grocery store? sounds like you're pretty insecure if what someone wears bothers you so much... sad really.

Unfortunately this beanie indoors thing is spreading beyond bouldering. I recently was at a dental school interview and one of the other applicants wore a beanie indoors with his suit the whole day during the tour and interview.

Much like folks who walk around with a bluetooth sticking out of their ear, I'm thankful the beanie wearers are kind enough to clearly flag themselves as a person to avoid. Makes it much easier for me to decide who to interact with at the gym.

I also don't judge people by what they wear. i could really care less. I do take offense to V2 gumbies calling out my climbing ability when they can't even get up the birthday party routes.

Don't know what technically qualifies a hat as a yarmulke, but this was big enough that it was pulled down to his eyebrows and covered his ears and didn't look like any yarmulke I have ever seen.

Most of the bodies heat is lost through the feet and head. I wear a beanie when its cold, because its cold, and in the gym when its cold because its not heated and cold. Beanies = Warmth. All gyms have the "Brahs" you seem to be referring to but not everyone who makes noise climbing is one of them. Maybe these guys crushing and wearing beanies have nothing to to with each other. Do you ever make noise climbing? One day you'll learn how strenuous hard routes are and sometimes you just gotta get loud to get sh*t done.

Whenever I see a boulderer or someone in a rad beanie, I think, "Ooh, I should find yarn like that and crochet one of those!" I rarely ever wear hats, though, I just like to make them, give them at gifts, and observe other people wearing them. The breathing thing makes me wonder if you're especially sensitive to loud breathing sounds. I'm sensitive to loud chewing or spitting sounds, but not so much to the breathing, I think. Then again, I don't know how loud is loud--what's the decibel level here?

People tend to breathe louder and harder when they are starting to get pumped or tired. The logic behind the beanie is obvious... it keeps you warm. As a matter of fact I'm wearing a beanie right now. It sure sounds like you're either jealous of, or annoyed by the beanie-wearing shirtless traversing boulderers. Either way, none of us can help you there, this is a personal problem. My only suggestion is to get laid more, maybe you'll stop caring. EDIT: Normally I'm not this sarcastic or condescending. But how can you not expect to get flamed by everyone when you ask for such silly explanations.

Ladies - Please chime in if you have had sex with one of the traversing beanie wearing loud breathing folks. Were you attracted by the shirtlessness? The beanie? The loud breathing? (I know how you girls love it when dudes get their scream on in the gym.) Did they keep the beanie on for sex?

I have several beanies. I only wear them in the cold, though, and one at a time. Thank you for your concern.

SO as it turns out, this is just a commonly held myth. check this out from the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7789302.stm look for: HATS AND THE COLD btw, I DO think it's funny when some climb without shirts ... especially in the fall/winter. I have to admit, though, that I am an occasional for-warmth beenie wearer (beenie weenie?) But am most def not a brah or a gym grunter. I prefer to adorn a brightly colored set of tail feathers and strut about the gym crowing. :) [image]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9TrmJ9MRg6M/TONsQGa2sQI/AAAAAAAAAHI/xnwk5bSkmO8/s1600/peacock-wooing-peahen1.jpg[/image] lol.. a short internet blurb with no actual information to back it up.. nice.

They are paying homage to the Vikings. It all started with them and those metal beanies that had horns protruding out of the side. It is even emmulated in the head gear for the 'True Warrior' in the Warrior Dash competitions. Jinx

Stfu you girl...what do u know? Besides how to project v-easy over the course of months?? U guys are right...at places like brooklyn boulders, there are tons of buff young studz, complete with mustaches, technicolor tattoos, and their sisters jeans. These dudes are pretty strong, if u consider sessioning the big campus rungs @ a bw of 130 lbs a feat of strength.

Hmm. This thread makes me happy that I don't care what people wear at the gym, I just climb and keep to myself.

This thread was founded by douchbagery. Thus it will continue to be ran by it. That said. I boulder and rope climb at my local gym. I often wear a hat in the gym, sometimes it's a cap other times a beanie. It's main purpose is to control my long hair. I've never thought twice about what anybody thought of it. I also never thought what someone would think about my breathing on a hard route or problem. Seems people need to worry more about climbing than fashion or their own insecurities.

donwanadi wrote: I would like to understand why some people wear beanies.... It's to annoy/confuse internet nerds into posting about it on rock climbing forums.

It is comforting to leave this forum for a month or so and return to find people still talking about a piece of headwear that has nothing to do with actual climbing. That said, nice beanie, karmi!

It's called a toque. It's to keep the brain warm, also some are doped with D30 which protects the cranium.
