Well I've done a few things around school, but I just realized the strangest thing I've ever tried to climb. I don't know if it really counts because I didn't even get half way up, but there is this huge angel statue in Quito, Ecuador that kind of looks over the city. Well this summer when I was there with some friends, a few weeks after a climbing trip, I was desperately searching for something to climb and when we got to the base of the statue it was perfect. The angel is standing on what looks like a globe of the earth and all the land areas are raised. So I tried it to see how far I could get up, but before I was even 5 feet off the ground, one of the adult leaders on the trip came and yelled at me to get down. I do have a picture of me at the base of this thing starting to climb, but not one of me while climbing. Looking back, I suppose it was kind of a disrespectfull thing to do, but I was desperate at the time.

Not that strange, but in high school a buddy and I made a sport of climbing onto roofs of schools. Never meet one we couldn't beat in northern Toronto (and we tried a *lot*), and we collected dozens of tennis balls, pucks, soccer balls, etc. Spike/Adam

I was up in SIBERIA climbing prehistorc Frozen WOOLLY MAMMOTH carcasses last fall. But I think that truly, the WEIRDEST thing I've ever climbed is the West Buttress on Denali. There are 500 people on the damn thing at all times, during climbing season. Now THAT's WEird...

I used to sell shoes in a sporting goods store. The shoes were all stacked in the back room on rows and rows of metal shelves that went to about 15 feet high. I would push the boxes into the shelves just enough to expose small crimp ledges. Most people climbed to get shoes, but no one else strategically made "problems". When no one was looking I'd dyno for boxes or exposed shelf edges. I had a few embarassing times when my legs would swing into the boxes and send a stack or two of shoe boxes through the other side. Yahhh, I'm a climbing addict.

I have climbed all sorts of buildings. Under ladders. Once I climbed up the side of one of those huge refrigeration units they use on big buildings. Parking structures. In Flagstaff AZ they have a buildering route in the guide book called Sobriety Test. Its a fist jamming extraviganza. But the only problem is that the only it gets done is by drunken climbers on bar strolls. Thus the name. Lets just say many of mangled ankles and broken egos. Ah! but the stories it could tell. Rockitup!

A couple of friends and I climbed the front lounge of our high school at lunch one day. We had to use slings with a biner around support beams as protection. At the top we set up an anchor that will now be there forever I guess? It was super fun because I got to lead it and everyone at my school was so amazed. Now at the top of the lounge in our school there are two bright blue slings/a couple of biners, and a couple of initials written on the white wall with big black felt.

graniteboy: you've *got* to explain the climbing a wooly mammoth carcass thing... I can imagine eclimbing a lot of things, but climbing dead things that used to move about (let alone dead things that moved about 25000 years ago) is waaaay beyond the pale.

I pretty much try and climb anything that has an edge I can put my fingers on, or a crack to stick my hand into. The outside of my college is all rock, I tool around out there when I get bored, there are also some exposed cracks inside, which I try climb sometimes, but they are a little short. Arete

A building on campus at the University of Nebraska. It was a 90' chimney on the outside of a stairwell. I would have had a beautiful view of Memorial Stadium - the home of the Huskers, but it was at 1am and it was dark outside. Ya see, climbin' buildings is ill-eagle in Neebraska and the Poe-leece would have been all over my ass. But I got the FA and didn't get arrested. Actually the whole thing went off much better than I had planned, but the climbing was much harder though. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

I haven't climbed anything weird but I know that ever since I started climbing I now look at a lot of things as "an opportunity to climb". It's scary... just walking home from the library I look at every building in a new way thinking, "I could climb that". This'll probably plauge me for the rest of my life won't it? *sigh* Once I get more confident I'll definitely have to start freaking people out. Nobody expects people to be able to climb up and down strange objects. But if you just went for it they'd probably get fairly weirded out...

I had a 15 minute traverse set up at work that I would climb after everyone went home at night, until recently. It started with two door jams a double access door (the tops when left open) some relief trim up to a recessed ceiling in the elevator foyer, back over to some relief trim and then six cubicle tops. I did this every night for about 6 weeks when one morning while waiting for the elevator to go home my boss and the building engineer were talking about repainting the walls. The engineer said it looks like someone is climbing the walls here. my boss, who knows I climb gave me the dirtiest look and I haven't climbed it since it was repainted.

There's a nightclub in Glasgow (the Shack) which has potential for some great bouldering problems on the wall inside. Never got to try much of it though. Apparently it's frowned upon.

I've been told that I used to climb EVERYTHING when I was little... I was able to get onto the counters before I could walk (or so I'm told...) and could escape easily from my walker and high chair. When I was four or five, I tackled this huge pine tree behind my house... I guess I got around 150 feet up before my mom found me. Lately, I've been climbing the bridges in town (both wooden and stone), and we have discovered that the lockers at school are climbable.

When I was in Munich Germany some time ago, before I ever had a desire to climb, some nice German people took me into the alps on a hike. They took me to this spire of rock called "the Little Man of Etal," maybe 60 or 80 feet high, I can't quite remember. These hard men and women gave it a shot but turned back. They egged me on. There was a chain on the side of this vertical spire to help pull yourself up; it was slippery polished rock as I recall, and I had on slippery sneakers. I made it all the way to the top. A pretty good feat because there was a metal tube on top with a book to sign in if you made it. Then the problem of downclimbing hit me hard. However, I made it. My name is still up there on "the Little Man of Etal" somewhere in the Bavarian Alps, between here and the Zugspitze.

I once A1 climbed out onto a suspended sculpture, with the intent of rearranging the parts. It was supposed to look like a fish, but it was a bunch of rusted junk. I figured that a little rearranging would show it to be what it was. Mistake. The cops grabbed me and filed a complaint with the District Attorney for Grand Theft. I was lucky to plead out to malicious mischief. That was when I was 22, a college student, and figured that I could get extra credit. Never overestimate the sense of humor of the police.

not really weird, but it was at an overlook at the lake here where i live and there was a swingset with a frame built around it and roof also...it was good practice. thats where i taught my buddy what i know about crimpers and dyno's and so on...and now after going bouldering only 3 times he wants us to take another 2 hr drive to go climb again...i guess the swingset was a good start!

i bouldered from the base of my girlfriends staircase to the second floor. Her parents came home while I was doing it...they just stared at me like I was a freak. She was just laughing the whole time. I finished it though, despite the fact that her mom still gives me crap about it followed by a strange look!

Is anyone familiar with the sculpture right beside the potomac river in D.C. that has just parts of a body sticking out. I think it had a leg coming out bending at knee, then back into ground, a arm reaching out, the head, and another limp. This thing is entirely aluminum. And when I was in the 8th grade couple years ago I scaled to the top of the knee while it was pouring down rain. I even have a pic. If I could figure out how to put one on my profile I would use it. also at my school there are lockers(believe it or not) and I like sticking my foot on the combination dial and using an underclinb on the vent strips near the top. \ I cant wait to go to RRG so I can climb some chairs @ miguels pizza. Oh yeah, I just remembered. this is not weird or strange but it was still pretty fun. we were doing an eggdrop contest(by the way I wone) and we had to climb up the bleachers before they were folded out. I'm short right? so the teacher says, "can ya get up there josh?" and I was like, " I can climb a 5.10 without working out for over 2 months. Well I guess it was over their heads cause they laughed at me. either that or they all onsight some .13's.

Here i was thinking that i was odd. in my school we have a wall covered in rock climbing handles. Its completly horizontal and made only for tall people i beleive. i'm only five ft two and i can't reach half of the handles. so instead of using them i used the cracks in the bricks to climb and reached thr roof. unfortunately it was during the spring fair at the school, and all the parents were freaking out. Its only ten or fifteen feet high.

on one wierd occasion, i was in the main building of Place des Arts (sp?) in Montreal. The walls inside are nicely made of stone and would make a good climb. i was just putting my hand on them and figuring out how i would hold them if i were to climb it, you knwo, just for practice. well a guy who was on this guided tour with me asked me "Why do you keep on FEELING the walls man?" and i instinctively said, "For practice" with a prefectly strait face. they gave me a funny look and moved away, then about 10 minutes later i reliezed why. OOPS!

I used to work the evening shift (4pm-12am) at a software company years ago. My team and I would go bonkers after Wendy's closed at 11pm (back in the day). So, we used to hang outside the company's main entrance and take in the night air. One night we were standing outside talking about climbing. We got so into it that I scaled the side of the building's brick wall. I didn't go too far up, but it was certainly the weirdest place I've climbed. The strangest thing I have ever climbed was the lockers at school. I had to get to the top of it for a picture, so I went on and climbed it. Another thing that I climbed was the window sill at school. Each room has a big window with a bar right in the middle of it, so I climbed it. I did it to show people that I could actually climb. I hope to be writing about more weird things that I have climbed. It will only take time before I think of one....

In the auditorium of my old high school, there were these little pegs that came out on the wall. one day i passed by and thought that why not and started to climb. i got all the way up to the top and looked down and the principle was standing there with his arms crossed looking dead at me. i got about a week of in school suspension for the stunt but it was worth it. i am the only person to ever do that.

There is this chinese restraunt in my town with a 16' statue of Budha in the front of it. I climbed to the top of that. And in Wyoming, there is this giant statue of Lincoln... I climbed to his head, and have a pic of me with half my head up his nose somewhere.

In line for "Dueling Dragons" at Islands of Adventure in Orlando Florida. You end up weaving in a maze of tunnels in line for this roller coaster. I got bored waiting so my brother and I took turns spotting each other as we climbed. We had quite a crowd (luckily no security) and it was a ton of fun. Hey in Orlando you take what you get. I also climbed the Water Tower at the Blues Club at Downtown Disney.

The wierdest thing i ever climbed would have to be my school. There is a little route i do up side of the gym (3 stories). Its pretty easy, the first move is kinda cool. V1 maybe, then the rest is less than V0. I wanna lead up this cell phone tower some time soon, cuz that would kick ass, it might even be multi pitch. 5.9? Well, I almost got busted climbing the gym after school. The cop pulled over on the road looked at me and then turned around. So i ran and ran Lesson learned, Not in day light [ This Message was edited by: fingerjam on 2002-06-01 08:45 ]

When I was little, I climbed the narrow hallways in my house chinmey style (with my bare feet and handds out to the sides). I'd climb until I hit the ceiling and my parents could walk underneath me. In kindergarden, while the other little ones were playing Chinese jumprope, I tried to pull the same stunt on the palmtrees nearby. I got up pretty far until the teachers started to notice... well when i had a 3 week break (i was broke) from climbing i went absolutly crazy i climbed trees, the house, through rungs of a ladder, anything over 2 meters high basically but most shameful of all me and my family were on a busy road waiting for a lift and on the side of a building looked like it would be very fun so in front of tones of cars and pedesterians i started to climb the walls after that my sister called me a freak and my mum was very embarresed but it was in good fun

The beach walls in Seapoint, Cape Town are five meters high, cut granite block walls where you can traverse for up to 50 meters. The weirdest was when I traversed over 5 sunbathing couples lying on the beach without anyone noticing anything.

Never climbed anything too unusual, but I have a tendancy to climb up the slides at playgrounds. Also climb over the covers on the tube-style slide using the raised adges where the pieces connect. We have an old swingset in the back yard with a set of monkey bars that I climb around on top of. I want to go back to my old elemetary school sometime cuz they have this great brick wall! There's also a small bit of brick on one part of school. I'll have to get there early sometime to check it out!

i just patched a hole in my sheetrock in the hallway.. caused by a back, using the hallway as an off-width crack / boulder problem / traverse thingy. At one point i had a foot on a light switch cover, and a foot on the cold air return. (i'm not the dumbass who put the hole in the wall.. That was my homie) Peaze frawg

I climb the underside and sides of those big wooden playground structures while my kids play on them. They usually have some great small cracks and edges. I bouldered on the outside of the visitors center as you enter Tennessee from Kentucky. The employees did not find it amusing at all, but it had some great small edges!! ????inkin playground equiptment bouldering, but then I remember that I used to have a job in a carpet warehouse. I was inventory control, so I had to go around and look for lost rolls of carpet. They were huge rolls of uncut, unfinished goods stacked in piles around thirty feet high, with little 4x8 inch tickets stapled on to Id them. I basically got paid to climb around the warehouse and make sure that all of the tickets matched their location. Thirty foot concrete ground falls will eventually ruin your knees. Kinda cool being paid to climb though. I guess thats as close as I'll ever be to being a sponsored climber. [ This Message was edited by: biggernhell on 2002-06-22 15:50 ]

Not very weird, but I also builder alot here in Batavia, (an hour west of chicago), not many places to climb, or at least without PAYING for gym time...but there's TONS of 150 year old limestone buildings, and the rain erodes it over time. theres churches i climb on, 100'+ ones. I can only climb at night cuz the police arent too freindly...but when its dark, with onlya headlamp, your buddy, and a few pitches worth of rope....seems jsut liek back in yosemite!! Chris

I was a leading hand with a bunch of roofers at Tarong Power station whilst it was getting built. We were working on the coal slot bunkers which had 35 degree pitch roofs. Out of all the roofers I was the only dummie who would go out on the purlins a hundred feet above the concrete without a harness and apply the isolation tape to the top of the purlins. The purlins were 6 feet apart so it was a bit of a stretch from one purlin to the next. One of my aprentices related to me that he and a mate climbed to the top of one of the tower cranes right to the tip of the pulley. I`ve also been to the top of a dragline at a coal mine, very special view from a hundred and fifty feet up looking as far as the eye can see both north and south gaining a perspective on just how huge that mine really is. ...Phil...

My moms brick chimney, nothing but crimpers and edges and its quite painful. A few flag poles, stainless steel pipeing hanging from the ceiling at work, up the underside of 3 flights of concrete steps that led to my old apartment. Yeah, I know not very wierd, but I'm going to keep my eye open for more. Steve

I'd have to say the strangest thing I've done "climbing-wise" would be the session of human bouldering done at Miguel's Pizza in Kentucky. We had people bouldering people! The problem was to start "piggy-back style" on someone's back, mantle over their shoulders, down the front, through their legs and up their back again. It was freakin' hilarious

Back in 1978 I too got caught climbing my college dorm. I was doing a skyhook travere out a 1/2 inch ledge out the third floor lounge window. I had a rope but the traverse was dicey since the building starting chipping away. More recently I climbed a 5.9 tree approach to a climb in Thailand. The tree climb is called "Tarzan" See" target="_blank">http://member.newsguy.com/~climbing/FunPhotos.html">See the picture of Tarzan on this page on my site. Peace Karl

The "Sobriety Test Crack" in downtown Flagstaff, AZ. After the climb I had to find a way down and was floodlighted by the gustappo. "Yep, they got that "mother gooofing" thief again. So, I downclimbed a mortered limestone wall to where I could jump onto a dumpster....that was where I was "caught in the action of a crime against humanity". It was a classic sight, while I was bound and cuffed in the back of the ociffers car and hearing my friends give "beta" and "urge" the coppers on. "Come on man, you got it!!!" "Just rock your ancle left and wedge that boot in!!!" "Jam your hand and wedge it in that crack....your a real cop are you not???" So, they got to try and boulder this three storey problem....it never happened and they let me go after some intense interrogation of my friends.

Well, for work I get to climb, and the best was when I raped from the top of stapples center (where the Lakers and Kings play). But when I raped I did it Aussie style and almost got kicked off the gig. Climb safe and don't drive angry -Zac

I wanted to add a link to that photo on this thread but I'm not sure how to do it... that human bouldering does make for a wild party game though!

Add "The Macaroni Grill" to the list on buildings with positive holds. Also last night I rapped out of a dorm room window. [ This Message was edited by: newtons_law on 2002-07-17 07:16 ]

Radio tower, water tower, brickwalls, a huge smoke stack, tail fin of a huge gutted out airplane, slab climb upon exiting the cockpit of the airplane, palm trees, balconies, and fire place chimneys.

Heres a good one for ya... Climbed a football Y-thingy (you know what im talking about, the thing they kick the ball between for the extra point.) That may not sound hard, or even too wierd, but try doing it with no hands. It was soo funy looking. Hardest thing i've ever done, cause i kept falling upside-down.

Another crazy climb was the inside of my dresser. Its built into my wall, but if you open the drawers and go into my closet you can fit through the holes that the open drawers make. The only problem is a siding bar between each drawer, so you only have like 6" of space to climb into it. (im a very skinny person, even though im around 5'10"-11") Great for hide and seek, not so good when someone starts closing drawers. Also a good place to go and "think" in privacy.

The strangest thing that I have actually sended was the corner crack between the office buildings where I used to work in central PHX. It was perfect hand jam for about 3 stories!! ivanm BTW...I only made it up to the first story. I chickened out on the rest. Just didn't want to mislead anyone! There's a building downtown, and any climber would agree it's just one of those that you just wanht to climb! It's made of this plasti-rock, or soemthing, I'm not too sure, but a friend and I went bouldering on the building, needless to say the sotre manager threatened to call the cops on us! but hey, it was funn still! I made the first ascent of a cliff coming out of a lake, I started climbing from a boat and about a third of the way up I realized that the cliff was inhabited by hairy spiders as big as my hand, and they were many, and they were fast, they could climb well above 5.15, and I had a feeling that they wanted me for lunch. Unfortunately I couldn't go down as it would have meant leaving gear behind. The climb which was moderate 5.8 without the spiders suddenly became a hard 5.10 which I speed climbed barely protected. I didn't even know that such things existed around here. steve

Once on a tour I was leading in Spain, I tried to do a stemming problem on top of the parapet in the Castle in Segovia, but my daughter gave me hell and said I should get down before a guard saw me and I got shot; on another trip I was in Portugal, in Evora, and I tried liebacking a 1st century Roman column, only to find out it was highly illegal... the strangest real rock I have climbed is Stein's Pillar, near Smith Rock. Guess who did the FA back in the day??

Thats a cool pic Daisuke! Now there's a climber. My weirdest place(not really weird but oh well!) is probably buildering up some of the walls of our condo we stayed at in Colorado. They go up about 3 stories but its a little freaky when you got the managers sitting at the bottom waiting for you to get down. I still want to try some of Houston's Skyscrapers.... -Adam

I've done the normal doorframes, school, chimney, etc. But the weirdest is somewhat sacreligious....every sunday I sit in church just dreaming of the climbing and one night w/ just a few friends in the church I tried it out. I got a sick heal hooking traverse working over the alter....the possibilities there are endless, but they are recontructing our church so... But if anyone is ever in northern Ky I'll show you the art of church climbing! [ This Message was edited by: dyno2finish on 2002-08-01 21:37 ]

Let's see, I've climbed fireplaces, houses, and I've tried to climb the building at OSU Mansfield campus. It's not too strange, but it's fun when there's not a lot of actual rock around!

I can relate to the Church climbing There's a great 200 meter traverse about 6' off the ground all the way around the curch near E.Fulton and N.Lafayette in Grand Rapids, done it a million times. The Crux is getting over the door on the Northeast side. The best downtown climb in Kalamazoo is the Presbyterian church next to Bronson park. I've done it a few times and have yet to get the top. I know I'm not the only one doing it too, sometimes I get up a ways and see CHALK MARKS! Who are you! PM me! Kalamazoo is also home to Pharmecia (a really big drug company) and on one of their buildings downtown there are sections of steel bars set vertically, about 4" apart, 6" deep, and 8+ stories tall! Looks like some fun aid climbing with a bunch of cams!

the hallway in my dorm was just wide enough to put your hands on one wall and your feet on the other and climb up that way. baseboards, handrails on stairs, doorjambs...one has to get creative in a dorm. my church has the coolest stone wall right in the front of the sanctuary that is just begging to be climbed...haven't done it yet though.

There's this sweet stone tower in the woods not too far from my home. I'd like to climb to the top, but so far have only gone as high as my instincts will let me with no rope or pad.

SSBN 730 OHIO class submarine Two routes: One in the lower level watchstation in the engineroom. I called it the fly on the wall at 5.11b. Second was during a swim call I slapped the slopers up the turtle back by gripping the underclings as the boat rocked back and forth I inched up and crimped down for when the boat tilted steeper and steeper. Made it when the swell was low but later it spit me off into the ocean for the repeat.
