Well I've done a few things around school, but I just realized the strangest thing I've ever tried to climb. I don't know if it really counts because I didn't even get half way up, but there is this huge angel statue in Quito, Ecuador that kind of looks over the city. Well this summer when I was there with some friends, a few weeks after a climbing trip, I was desperately searching for something to climb and when we got to the base of the statue it was perfect. The angel is standing on what looks like a globe of the earth and all the land areas are raised. So I tried it to see how far I could get up, but before I was even 5 feet off the ground, one of the adult leaders on the trip came and yelled at me to get down. I do have a picture of me at the base of this thing starting to climb, but not one of me while climbing. Looking back, I suppose it was kind of a disrespectfull thing to do, but I was desperate at the time.

Not that strange, but in high school a buddy and I made a sport of climbing onto roofs of schools. Never meet one we couldn't beat in northern Toronto (and we tried a *lot*), and we collected dozens of tennis balls, pucks, soccer balls, etc.

I was up in SIBERIA climbing prehistorc Frozen WOOLLY MAMMOTH carcasses last fall.
But I think that truly, the WEIRDEST thing I've ever climbed is the West Buttress on Denali. There are 500 people on the damn thing at all times, during climbing season. Now THAT's WEird...

I used to sell shoes in a sporting goods store. The shoes were all stacked in the back room on rows and rows of metal shelves that went to about 15 feet high. I would push the boxes into the shelves just enough to expose small crimp ledges. Most people climbed to get shoes, but no one else strategically made "problems". When no one was looking I'd dyno for boxes or exposed shelf edges. I had a few embarassing times when my legs would swing into the boxes and send a stack or two of shoe boxes through the other side. Yahhh, I'm a climbing addict.

I have climbed all sorts of buildings.
Under ladders. Once I climbed up the side of one of those huge refrigeration units they use on big buildings. Parking structures.

In Flagstaff AZ they have a buildering route in the guide book called Sobriety Test. Its a fist jamming extraviganza. But the only problem is that the only it gets done is by drunken climbers on bar strolls. Thus the name. Lets just say many of mangled ankles and broken egos. Ah! but the stories it could tell.

Rockitup!

A couple of friends and I climbed the front lounge of our high school at lunch one day. We had to use slings with a biner around support beams as protection. At the top we set up an anchor that will now be there forever I guess? It was super fun because I got to lead it and everyone at my school was so amazed. Now at the top of the lounge in our school there are two bright blue slings/a couple of biners, and a couple of initials written on the white wall with big black felt.

graniteboy: you've *got* to explain the climbing a wooly mammoth carcass thing... I can imagine eclimbing a lot of things, but climbing dead things that used to move about (let alone dead things that moved about 25000 years ago) is waaaay beyond the pale.

I pretty much try and climb anything that has an edge I can put my fingers on, or a crack to stick my hand into. The outside of my college is all rock, I tool around out there when I get bored, there are also some exposed cracks inside, which I try climb sometimes, but they are a little short.

A building on campus at the University of Nebraska. It was a 90' chimney on the outside of a stairwell. I would have had a beautiful view of Memorial Stadium - the home of the Huskers, but it was at 1am and it was dark outside. Ya see, climbin' buildings is ill-eagle in Neebraska and the Poe-leece would have been all over my ass. But I got the FA and didn't get arrested. Actually the whole thing went off much better than I had planned, but the climbing was much harder though.

TRADitionally yours,

Cali Dirtbag
