Sorry, no data, just personal experience. I'm not saying that implying my experience is as good as data, I just don't have data, and honestly never really knew data on this existed.

And, I also don't deny there have been attacks by goldens, labs, etc. I've seen aggressive dogs of all breeds, though generally there is some history (blindness, abuse, tumor) to "explain" the behavior.

I'm not sure how I fall on regulation of breeds. My point was more that the general argument of "it's not the breed it's the owner" seems, generally, to be contrary to my experience. Your explanation that it's the owners looking for aggressive dogs reinforcing those traits through their interaction with the dog, as well as through selective breeding isnt (as I understand it) fully separate from my point. I think mine includes yours.

I think it fully comes down to a combination of the two. I have a cocker spaniel. Cute, cuddly, sweet dog. That said, I don't trust her with small children and I don't take her to the crag. Small children... I know that her ears are sensitive as they are in most of her breed. What do kids do? They pull on dogs ears. I don't trust her not to snap at one. Not because she's done it before, but because I know the potential is there. Crags... I don't take her because I don't intend to spend all of my time on the ground watching her. I don't want her to inconvenience other people, even though I would keep her leashed. And... I don't want to have to be worried about my dog instead of the climb or the climber I'm belaying. it comes down to the owner and the breed. Pits and Rotties aren't necessarily more aggressive than other breeds, but their tensile jaw strength is higher which causes more damage when they do bite. And yes, I think the way the owner controls their animal has a lot to do with what results occur. If the dog can get out and attack somebody, that's the owner's fault. If it's kept contained and controlled, there is less potential for it to happen. With any breed. We had a pit that little kids pulled on, jumped on, got its' ear pierced by a smaller dog and it just laid there and let it happen. But that's not always the case. I don't think that there should be breed restrictions, but I do think there should be restrictions on who can have dogs and who can't.

Personally, I first got that memo at least a dozen girlfriends ago. I don't think women are on the distribution list.
