Hello ... I just moved to the NYC area from Pa. and I'm looking for people to get out and climb with. I've been to the gunks (mostly for bouldering but also some trad) and am up for any trip there or in the area (heard Central Park has some bouldering...) on the weekends. I'm also looking for someone who might want to start a weekly or bi-weekly trip to a local gym to get into shape any time after 6 p.m. during the week. Again, I'm not too familiar with what's around but I'm always up for trying something new :) Looking to boulder/sport but have experience with TR and following on trad.

Hey All,
I will be relocating to NYC in December and was wondering what the best climbing gym would be for anyone living in Manhattan without a car.
It seems that the 59th St/CCC gym will be closing due to renovations, and the "best" gyms otherwise are either in New Rochelle or New Jersey.
Either way, I am looking for climbing partners interested in climbing weekends anywhere reasonable. I do 5.10 on toprope and have been climbing on and off for 7 years.
Female /35 years old / 105 pounds

Get yourself one of those zip car memberships and drive to Jersey or Westchester. The city gyms are really subpar. Linky

I was absolutely looking for outdoor (gunks) partners as well, eventually, although I don't know what the outdoor weather will be like from December and forward... that was why my main mission right now was to find the "best" available gym, even if they are sub-optimal, just to get going and start off somewhere.
I can follow on 5.9s, but I really don't lead (yet...one of these days I'll get there).

Chelsea Piers is nice but loaded with rich yuppie wankers trying to find an alternative to the jazzercise class. It's a little expensive too. The zip car thing would be the way I would go. What part of the city are you moving to?

Another point of view on Chelsea :
certainly the best climbing gym in NwYk although a little bit expensive (my fourth year in NwYK).
I would not qualify the climbers as "yuppie, etc ..."
but there is certainly a small core of climbers leading 5.11 and above and it is often difficult to find a partner on the spot, although it is possible.
Very good in particular to build up strength over a certain period , especially if you go after/at the same time to climb in the Gunks .

The Cliffs at Valhalla is a good option. It's a 38 minute ride on the Metro North... If you come with 3 or more people, they'll pay your cab fare from the train station.

Welcome to NY! As for gyms here in the city, I haven't really been to many of them. Chelsea IS the best one, but it's pricey. Of course, you get access to the whole facility, not just the rock wall.
Anyway - this last weekend, my friend and I went up to The Rock Club in New Rochelle. It's a bit of a pain to get to....Metro North railroad from Grand Central Station to N.Rochelle, and then a 15-20 minute walk.
I'd be happy to go up there and check it out with you on a weekend day if you'd like.
I'm looking for partners for the next season too, if you're interested. I am at the Gunks pretty much every weekend in season, though I don't climb Sundays(I do trailwork - BTW, we can always use volunteers and it's a great way to get a toehold into the climbing community). But - Saturdays definitely and it's possible I may get up some weekdays too.
I don't lead hard(up to 5.5), but I am pretty familiar with the place, and am looking for a good partner. Also happy to do some TR's to get some harder routes in.
Shoot me a PM if you're interested in talking more.
And, from what I hear the CCC is actually not closed yet. Haven't looked into it, but it seems they're just holding on, waiting to be told the place is closed.

Morning Folks,
With the temperature hitting 45 degrees and sunny its time to stop driving up to the dacks and get into the rock season routine. I'm looking to hook up (ie climb with; sexual relations that affect my climbing are completely unacceptable :) ) with 5.8-5.9 leaders who climb almost every weekend at the Gunks. I work in manhattan and live out in the NJ burbs. If you or anyone you know spends most weekends at the gunks and likes starting early, moving fast, linking pitches, and keeping things low-key please get in touch.

Moss Island has been great to climb recently. Today there were about a half a dozen people there not including myself and climbing partner.
Nice day it was after the morning winds dried everything out.
Last evening we climbed until dark.
Nice piece of booty I grabbed today after I spotted it last night.
If you know who I am and see me there and it's yours let me know and I will happily return it. I will first school you on how to retrieve your "stuck" gear.

Any NY climbers need a partner for tomorrow at the Gunks. It seems knowone from Connecticut wants to make the trip. I've got a rack, rope, gear etc. I've only been to the Gunks once and didn't get a chance to lead (was with a guide) and I really want to get out for the first time this season. As of right now the forecast looks good. But who knows what will happen.

It looks like this is my first weekend in the Gunks of the season - yeah!!! I had 2 weeks in Jtree to start the season but it's not the same as being home.
Can't wait to see what this year brings.

Not sure about that but you are supposed to do as you are requested and stop by to get a permit. To climb all day for $3 or $20 a season is pretty cheap.
I find it funny that people hate paying the $3 but will yap in their phone and get a ticket of $50 and not complain.
We all know that the island doesn't have much to offer but rock and the walk into town is a half mile of torturous hills (not).
If you do bring children you may be asked provide proof of guardianship. You can't have an 18 y/o bringing their 16 y/o girlfriend and claim to be the responsible adult.
I wouldn't doubt it if officer friendly stops by this year with pass book in hand. From what I know he didn't last year. It's good to show your face to them anyway.
The more people that pay the more that taxpayers will know how much use the area gets. The more this happens the better chance of $$ returning to the climbers there in some way. Picnic tables, port-a-pots,
planted trees for shade etc..
If only 50 passes are sold why invest any time or money in the area?? This idea has been passed around.
Many people got a $3 all day pass for free last year.
I'm sure that it will not continue forever.
Enough of the inconvenient daily pass system. Buy a year pass for $20 and never have to stop by to the guys in blue. That is what I do.

Little Falls , the home to Moss Island is having their first Memorial Day Parade in quite some time this Monday. Hope to see a few of you sporting your 5.10 Guide shoes along the streets. The island is just a hop skip and a jump from all the local festivities. The island should be in good shape pending the grass gets mowed.

Is anyone with a car planning on going to the Gunks this weekend? We are 3 climbers based in Manhattan that would love to carpool up with someone.
We have all necessary climbing gear and sufficient knowledge, the guy leads up to 5.9 and us two girls lead up to 5.5s.
If you plan on going there but don't want to carpool but just meet up there that's fine too, we are always looking for new climbing partners.

You know it seems that more people in NYC who climb have racks than cars. I have no car but I do have a rack and rope.
If no one has a car to drive up, I'd be willing to bus it up Saturday if there's someone who wants to climbing Saturday-Monday.
I did some 5.7's last week, looking to jump on some 5.8's.

hahaha - I don't know if it' was because I had my dog(probably was....) but I never was able to hook up the NYC/NP carpool thing when I tried to get it going.
And, when I had a van, people who wanted to catch a ride were always somehow...not understanding....that it cost more than $5 for their share of a round trip ride, nor that an ETD meant an actual time and not "somewhere around, give or take an hour...."
Here's my commute:
- No dog - Bus to NP, walk to in front of Guilded Otter, thumb out. Return - Walk to the overlook, see if anyone's headed into town, and if not, walk back to just bepfre the overlook, and stick my thumb out. Works like a charm.
- With Dog - Taxi to Grand Central, Train to Poughkeepsie, SUNY New Paltz students hired to take me to Camp Slime on Friday(or taxi at $50 plus tip, one way, which is what I am doing today - OUCH!). Return trip - reverse the order
