I make it down to DC a couple of times a year and usually hit up Great Falls or Carter Rock. Next time I'm headin' that way I'll let you know. You're always welcome to do the short roadtrip up and hang for a bit in PA...I boulder mostly due to the purity, freedom of movement, and lack of a consistent partner, but I'm always down for roping up. Good luck.

Wow, "truck" sounds way better then "Sun-gam", I mean... what the hell is a "sun-gam" anyway? Maybe DDT will let me change my username to straight up "Magnus", I mean - it worked for John, right? It'll make up for those stickers I was promised not reaching me in time. Did you guys know that rum is actually stronger then scotch? Now I'm clearly not saying it's better (I mean, what is?) just that many types have a higher ethanol content. Interesting, I thought.

Most whisky is distilled to around 120 proof--or 60% and is then usually bottled at either 80 or 86 proof after it is done aging. Curt

Curt You are correct in that most "craft" whiskeys and many fine brandies (http://germain-robin.com/) stop after a second pot distillation which is around 110 proof or so. Most, however, aren't made that way. Yes there are regulations. Rather than point it out, here is a link that better explains: http://www.pinkiesonline.com/whiskey.htm

Yes. To be clear, I was referring to "whisky," which is normally understood to mean single malt scotch. Single malts are never made through the continuous distillation process, but only in batches in pot stills. From http://www.maltmadness.com
maltmadness wrote: The first distillation run produces the so-called LOW WINES with an alcohol percentage somewhere between 10 and 20%. The second distillation occurs in a special, smaller still called the SPIRIT STILL. Some pot stills also have so-called purifiers at the top, for example the spirit still at Ardbeg. Using a purifier is said to produce a better quality of spirit (mostly by those using a purifier on their stills ;-) Within every distillation, the distillate is divided into three CUTS of which only the second cut, the HEART OF THE RUN , will be used; * Heads (the first liquid that trickles from the swan neck) * Heart of the Run (the spirit that will evolve into whisky) * Tails (the last liquid with an ever decreasing proof) The first (HEADS) and the last fraction (TAILS) are sub-standard material, to be re-distilled together with the next batch of low wines. The heart of the run is a clear liquid of up to 70% alcohol/volume. Please note that this liquid isn't 'whisky' quite yet - first it has to mature for at least three years - at least that's the law in Scotland... As you can see, the "heads" of each distillation (the highest alcohol content) are only used to the extent that they are recycled. Curt
