woohoooo! Season is here!!!!!

I am heading out to Joshua Tree on Thursday for 2 weeks, to start myself off. Didn't go to the Gunks this weekend and it sounds like that may have been a good thing. A few accidents, with one person in pretty serious situation. My thoughts go out to that person, and his family and friends in this difficult time.

I'm returning to NY and will likely begin my Gunks season on the weekend of 4/9. As usual, I look for partners to climb with throughout the season. Here's my situation:
- I lead up to 5.5, going to be doing some easiers on my first few weekends, to get back into things.
- I follow up to 5.8 face, can try harder. Am rather experienced with prussiks and have had several compliments on my ability to use them efficiently....
- Happy to belay on harder routes for those who usually can send without falling. NOT interested in belay slaving for people who are testing limits as a matter of course(hangdogging)
- Looking for people to follow on occassion, but also for partners to get on 5 and unders, swinging leads. Newish leaders welcome, but will want to have a good idea as to what you have done beforehand.

In the beginning of the season, I can climb both Saturday and Sunday. Trail work begins near the end of April, and then I can climb only Saturdays.

I would be happy to do ground school gear placement work with newbies on Sunday afternoons after trail work - From about 3pm - 5pm.

I usually get up there on Friday evening and stay at Camp Slime. Head home Sunday evenings. Possibly will be adding Fridays available to climb.

I have no car. Will meet people at the cliff.

Jave a good season everyone, and be safe!

That I do not know. I can say that if the slope faces south from what I have seen it's climbable.
Remember that the state campground will be closed this entire season.

Pictures? Oh yes....though it would be nice if I could get some good climbing shots this time, too. Here's the spring flowers from 2008. I haven't seen word about how they're looking this year. haven't asked but if they were really good, I think I would have seen photo threads about it on Stopo....

About being careful - you got that right. After reading the accounts of accidents at the Gunks this w/end, and with Woody's passing away in JTree, I have to admit I am a little weirded out. Definitely going to be careful. And, for the first time in like 3 years, I've got my helmet packed.

Mannnn.....I would prefer a more definitive rain forecast for the Gunks right about now. Like "yes or no" - rain or not. Tjis 30-40% chance BS just is really irritating.

Jtree was great, as usual. I still haven't edited the photos though.... Lots of lizards this time, and I bought a new lens, so could get some pretty good shots of the shy little guys.

The highpoint was getting to tag along with T.Gordon and his friends way back in the Queen Mountain area while he led a route called "Five Barmaids in my Pocket" or some such name. More than 2 hours hike in, through some terrain I'd never have attempted alone. Everyone else made it up the climb. I fell off at the crux....here's me just before that:

He offered to haul me through the crux so I could try the rest, but I lowered....I pretended it was the honorable thing to do, but the reality was that I was pretty sure that if I did get through the rest of the route, I would not have been too tired to get back to the trailhead!

edited for clarity

Sounds like a good trip! I've never met the guy, but he seems like an incredible powerhouse. Any time someone asks a question about some area I've hardly even heard of, he has a half dozen pictures of himself doing FA's in that area!

I swear to god, it seems like he's done FA's in every climbing location on earth!

GO

I was just at the beer walls yesterday and it looks like a large section or rock de-laminated from the base of the cliff just to the right of Pegasus....looks like all fresh rock and I don't remember it at the beginning of this season. Has anyone else noticed this?

BIG NEWS! I am going to be living at the Gunks! The caretaker's cabin at the Coxing Kill area became available and I got the gig. I'll be living - ON - the Mohonk Preserve!

Actually, I already started this weekend, and stayed in the cabin. SO nice to have a comfy bed, and a place to cook out of the rain.... hahaha. Teddy likes it too.

I leave NYC on Friday, and will be up there through November.

Sort of available to climb, if anyone is looking for a partner..... Sundays are trailwork day for me, but other than that...open!

If interested, send me a PM. I'll be still in the city for a few days but after that my internet access will be sporadic. I'm thinking I'll be able to check in every 2 or 3 days, but don't know as of yet. I will have no car, at least for a while. So - last minute by email won't work the best - but if you are planning a trip in the future, or just want to touch base/exchange info - let me know!

WEEEEEEEE!

Enjoy!!!

Thanks! Well...this is about as close to on grid as one can be and still be off grid. There's even a landline telephone(which is for preserve use in emergency, but I can make local calls on it if I want to). It's not right in the cabin, so easy enough to ignore, and that is my intention.

But I am going to be internet accessing via mobile set up every few days. Still - I can't imagine how jarring it will be to come back to NYC at the end of this.... Yesterday I had to go to Century 21(mega huge discount Dept Store) and the crowds and overwhelming quantities of STUFF for purchase was a sensory overload, and not in a good way.

Hello all!

My boyfriend and I just moved to NY. He is an experienced climber from Mexico - I am beginner/intermediate - but neither of us have our own gear nor know the area at all. We are looking for climbing partners who have extra gear to lend (or rent) and show us some neat sites. Also, are there organized groups that go out regularly? Our schedule is very flexible, we hope to meet fellow climbers who can "show us the ropes" of NY. We are so anxious to get out on the rock again!

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Daphne
