I have a friend who loves football. He says that for him climbing doesn't make sense because you put yourself in danger for no reason. So he thinks it is dumb.
Also says that a mistake in football doesn't do much, however a mistake while climbing could lead you to death.
Of course I've tryied to convice him to go outdoors with me sometime, so he can experience what climbing really is... but I guess he's just "too chicken"...
Anyways... what do you guys think?

if youre talking about american footbal... your friend doesnt know what hes talking about. IMHO thats way more dangerous than climbing. and soccer too. except that climbing seems to have a higher mortality. but just dont make mistakes and youll be almost home and dry.

You can always restrict yourself to toproping, always use a helmet, and in general be pretty paranoid about safety, redundance etc. That should remove almost all of the risk from climbing, while keeping the fun in it! (For those to whom the risk itself is not the attraction.)

I haven't found football to be dangerous at all. Of course, I stick to watching it.

I wonder if we'll all be crippled and arthritic in our old age like the football players are because of what we're doing to our bodies. Our hands anyway.

Actually the most injury prone sport is, oddly enough, girls Cross Country. So step aside all you tough football and hockey players

There may be fewer injuries/deaths in organized american football than climbing as a whole, but you gotta remember that millions of people play football every day without pads, on concrete, etc and get hurt or worse. I'd bet that per participant capita, football is immensly more dangerous than climbing.

Even organized football isn't "Safe". A guy at my cousins highschool was killed when his neck was broken during a tackle. A guy in my unit in the Marines knew a guy who died form dehydrationa nd heat stroke. Deaths themselves might not be as prolific as injuries, but it's not like it's rolling in feathers. (which, believe it or not, is attributed to an average of 3 deaths per year! People choke on the feathers :? )

Your friend blatantly admitted that he is inferrior. My friend does that all the time on the topic of snowboarding.

Football is just a game. Climbing is an indescribable lifestyle. The two cannot be compared.

Cold Climb, climbing is not "an indescribable lifestyle", in fact that is the cheesiest thing I have ever heard  ! A lifestyle is the way you live(example: he has an austere lifestyle), climbing is something you do for recreation. Its not something you have to do. A diabetic has to take insulin everyday but that doesn't describe his or her lifestyle. Grow up!

You obviously don't feel climbing like I do then. And like I said, it's indescribable, so I won't even try.

Who wants to grow up?

The fact that snowboarding is inferior to skiing? well yes everyone knows that snowboarding is for people who either can't learn to ski, or quit skiing because they are unable to progress in it.

I was looking at the BD catalogue the other day. I need to get a job for a while and buy some skis. Snowboarding doesn't appeal to me, but man, that backcountry skiing sure does.

Hey, don't knock football till you've tried it. As an ex college football player and a current climber, I can tell you they're both appealing in their own ways.

Finally. A voice of reason. as a current college football player, i agree with whatsupdoc in totality.

I cannot put into words for most of you guys what it means to me to put on the pads and make the catch and seal the block and cross the goal line on Saturdays. The adrenaline and excitement that I get flowing through my veins is sereal.

Likewise, I cannot explain to my teammates why hanging onto a left-handed monodigit reaching around a roof w/ only a righty slapper and a half-foot that's been in and out of that crack for an hour feels so darn magnificent. The adrenaline and excitement that I get flowing through my veins is sereal.

Live and Let Live.... we just do our living at the sharp end of the rope.
