Don't you think everyone should have to fill out a COMPLETE profile including pics and logs in order to post here? That way you can put a face and a location to some of the dumb ass statements people say!!

well, even if the owners did that, i doubt theyd be able to check if someone actually has a pic of them on the profile and not just some random pornstar from the net

That would completely kill the whole spirit of internet opinion forums! Without being faceless, you would not get honest opinions. Identifying everyone would suppress a form of free speech. It doesn't bother me that some folks turn into egomaniac douch-bags on this forum. They either have self esteem issues or are overcompensating for their lack of real skills. Trolls will be trolls, but there is lots of good info to be had on this forum as well.

I was actually just thinking about this the other day. On some other forums, you'll actually get hassled for not filling out your profile. I like to look at others profiles to see 1. what their experience is 2. their background 2. what they look like. I've had people contact me in the past to go climbing, but had nothing in their profile. In most cases, I won't climb with them.

It's a slippery slope you are suggesting heading down here. "I'll give you all the personal info. on me that you want. I've got nothing to hide." That sounds a lot like the Bush administrations idea of wire tapping and personal searches of internet history. Free speech is nurtured by annonimity.

v. good to know. I'm trying to get back into climbing, but it's been two years, and I'm nervous putting myself out there looking for climbing partners. No one likes to get laughed at, and I'm hoping that more experienced climbers will understand that I'm not just looking to get the 'jenny craig'. That said, I've also uploaded a recent, cute photo in the hopes that'll help my cause

Having the option of anonymity certainly changes things, but for every person it provokes a more honest and unguarded response from, it makes it easier (for whatever reason) for others to add imaginary inches to their, uh... ape index. In fact, I'd say more people hide behind anonymity to spray pointless bullshit about things they know nothing about... although I guess that's a truer side of those people's personalities, so maybe I'm in total agreement with you then. Doesn't matter to me though; I think it's better to have a general mix and I have no interest in forcing people to share more of themselves than they want to on the internet of all places.

With one exception -- I don't care what someone looks like and whether they have a teddy bear instead of the profile photo. I do like the climbing log and I try to keep mine current b/c I use it to track my progress (or lack thereof, LOL) and I think many people who do use it use it for the same reason. Still, REQUIRING everyone to fill out the profiles will result in all sorts of jokers filling in some random crap. It just doesn't work on the internet.

My profile is well populated. Pretty much tells you all you need to know about ole Dingus. I do get a lot of unsolicited offers to climb from the sheilas here, but its an rc.com phenom I'm resigned to enjoy. The horror... the horror... DMT

totally up for trad so long as it's fairly easy. I haven't climbed since the New River Rendezvous of 2005 (waves at J_ung - met you and your woman, there!) because I moved to canada to marry the guy I met online eight years ago. SO. now, I need to get back into it. but, I didn't mean to derail the thread into climbing partners. on-topic: I've always gone by tokitikki, and if you've ever messaged me, I always use my real name. I tend to not aggressively disagree with people unless I know EXACTLY what the heck I'm talking about and can stand by it without putting down other people. But that's just me, and I'm from the south. I try not to be a moron, but I'm also extremely polite. Unlike most people that get online, especially anonymously.

You don't read so well, do you? You're getting all high and mighty over a dead armadillo, and you don't even know if the armadillo is dead. All your respect for the dead is great, but I'm having a hard time seeing the respect for life and the living you claim to have.

angry wrote: Well, the reason for my empty profile name is that middle school students that I teach googled me and I came up. So I took out the identifying aspects and actually paid the site to change my user name too. Angry is actually more historical than fshizzle with my history in the triathlon forums. fshizzle wrote: Chapter 1 1Lo, in the days of Y2K, there was one who was known as angrywetsuit. Thine wetsuit wasn't angry, but anger toward such things as neoprene and zippers filled the man who bore this garment.2 In the days of ironman the cold water affected this man greatly, he was stricken with hypothermia, despite the wetsuit. 3He who bore anger toward the wetsuit adopted the name angrywetsuit and took residence in the ironman forum 4Angrywetsuit was a fierce forumite, calling the shit of bull and speaking in the tongue of trad climber. Surely such a thing was unheard of among the doctors and brokers who inhabit the land of ironman 5In time, the doctors and brokers had fallen prey to angrywetsuit, the outsider was banished. His true belief that training and persistence would suffer a man to step into the kingdom of the podium was not appreciated. Chapter 2 1 Angrywetsuit wandered the land, eager to race. What wasn't known about him though was he was a descendant of the land of Vedauwoo. 2In the days of the rock, Vedauwoo stands ever present. 3The earth begat rock4the rock begat sharpness 5sharpness begat wideness6wideness begat Vedauwoo. Chapter 3 1By and by, angrywetsuit found refuge with the forumites of RC. They knew him as Fshizzle.2Fshizzle was part of the tradition. This angered some and endeared him to others.3In this manner Fshizzle lived a happy life until a young sapling said "hi Mr. Fshizzle"4Fshizzle died that day and angrywetsuit was resurrected. The wetsuit has been left off because angry has departed from the land of ironman for many years now. 5These things I tell you are true, as they have been related to me, and they were related for my forefathers. 6Blessed be those who reads these words Amen Wait. Where is the part about your sister? I only skimmed it, but i am a pretty quick reader.

Also, to the OP, I'm having a hard time putting a face to your name since your face doesn't show up anywhere in your picture in your profile page: [image somewhere above] I'll just look for a short drunk in a helmet... although that describes a lot of climbers. Poor animal lost his land and lost his life cause man made car had to get there even if it takes some one's life away. Not just that but some fu8king as8hole has to become really funny and make a joke out of another life to entertaine people. Yap, great to go with profile Tree hugger alert!

Short drunk in a helmit? Wow aren't you clever! I'm sure if I look up clueless in the dictionary, I'll find your pics. Now let's talk about rocket science....Something else you know nothing about. Try to focus on the question at hand. Oh yes the original question did contain something about idiots saying stupid things, Right?

summitseeker wrote: Don't you think everyone should have to fill out a COMPLETE profile including pics and logs in order to post here? That way you can put a face and a location to some of the dumb ass statements people say!! See, your face doesn't really show up clearly anywhere in your profile, which is kind of funny. Even in the pic of the armadillo you still can't make out a clear (armadillo) face. I was making the obviously absurd connection that from the lack of a clear photo, for all we know that picture of the armadillo might as well be your picture (as in a picture of you). The key word here is 'absurd' so that one could tell I clearly wasn't being serious or trying to insult you. Armadillos = short, armored (helmet-like armor), and in this picture it looks like it's passed out drunk, thus short drunk in a helmet (which, as I've pointed out, also describes many climbers... this is a web site for climbers). Why am I explaining this? I'm not really sure. There was nothing malicious in my post. Sorry you just naturally assumed such and came at me with a couple of the worst lines I have ever heard in my life.
In reply to: I'm sure if I look up clueless in the dictionary, I'll find your pics. Are you kidding me? You replied to me directly right after I posted that comment and picture, and then some twenty posts later reacted to a non-existent insult (there really was no insult intended). Yes, I'm the clueless one here. To top it off, you rip off a horribly lame and unoriginal line that a third-grader would be embarrassed to use.
In reply to: Now let's talk about rocket science....Something else you know nothing about. Try to focus on the question at hand. Are you saying I was off topic? You complain we can't put faces to names: there isn't a photo I could recognize you by in your profile. I jokingly pointed this out. Seems on topic to me. I don't really think there's anything wrong with it and you do have photos even if your face doesn't show clearly in any of them, but I did think it was a little funny. The rocket science bit also doesn't really work for me. Is that an attempt to call me stupid? It doesn't really add up though. Saying someone 'isn't exactly a rocket scientist.' is intended to be litotic, but I think you really lost the sense of that in your delivery. Some of the most intelligent people in the world probably know little or nothing about rocket science as it falls into neither their field of study nor interest. Well, whatever. Do what you want; think what you want. I don't know your name and only have a vague sense of what you look like, but if you're ever looking to identify me just check my profile. (See, that was a joke... maybe not all that funny, but better than a lame cliché). So, back to rocket science... <edit>... and to answer the original question, "Don't you think?": No, I don't, not hardly never.</edit>

Wow, Don't I look like a dumb ass? After reading my last post, I certainly sound like a third grader. After reading your post, and finding words I'm going to have to look up, I would say you are closest to being a rocket scientist. Maybe, I'm a little sensative to being a short drunk in a helmit!! I truly do appologize for mistaking your post and lashing out at your post like a third grader. Hopefully, I didn't ruin this somewhat meaningfull thread. LOL Peace out

I think New Yorkers should wear name tags. "Hello Bob." "Howya doing Suzy?" The city would be a much friendlier place if ONLY New Yorkers would wear name tags. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! "Have a nice day Bill." DMT

I can understand why some people would not want to post a picture or fill out a profile. It can be pretty harsh here sometimes. I enjoy reading them and looking at all the pictures. I still need to post my climbing pictures once I figure out how to shrink the file sizes. If I were going to climb with someone, I would want a basic idea of who they were before I agreed. However, I don't think it is absolutely necessary for posting.

It has nothing to do with 'here.' It has to do with 'there' ie the workplace. People google people. They do. There also includes indentity theft. In today's internet it is a foolish thing to do. If there were real security it might be different. However there is NO security. And insisting a 15 year old, or any minor for that matter, use their real identity in online public forums is just-plain-stupid. DMT

DMT As you can see, I don't use my real name but that does not mean I can't fill out my profile and upload some pictures. This eliminates the possibility of identity theft. I agree with the safety issue concern, especially for minors.
