I know alot of you wanted to have the gathering on New Years, but rrradam and I feel it better to go with mid January do to the Epic factor for out of towners. So the dates are Jan 17th to the 19th. I will reserve one spot at Sheeps Pass for the 16th and two for the 17th to the 19th. Please let me know if you will be attending so I can add sites as needed. I think the sites can hold 50 people and 20 cars so don't be alarmed about only two sites. If these dates are a big deal and you had your heart set on New Years, I'm sorry but I'm only thinking of the big picture. I'm sure if you want to be at J-Tree at that time there will be alot of RC.com people there. So again I'm sorry if I did'nt make everyone happy, but I'm sure we will all have a great New Years and enjoy the gathering in January. -Zac [ This Message was edited by: pbcowboy77 on 2002-10-12 23:43 ] http://www.rockclimbing.com/events/list.php?ID=135 [ This Message was edited by: pbcowboy77 on 2002-10-21 23:25 ] [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2002-10-22 09:52 ]

Karen and I should be in, as we will be working in maryland at a Nuke till May of '03. Work will be slow till February, so we can fly home to climb at will on the weekends. My company will even pay for some flights home. Zac, go to California in the Routes DBase, and make an Event for this then I can get it added to the Front Page. You can also link all threads about this to that event by noting the # of the event you create, and editing the threads to include a link to that event # by scrolling down and entering in the event # in the correct field.

So can anyone tell me how bad a drive it is from San Diego to J-Tree? I understand that Palm Springs is a lot closer but the fares are high.

You're looking at about a two and a half hour drive. Roughly about 150 miles. Like any place around So. Ca. you want to leave early say five am to miss any traffic. I come from the north and it takes about an hour and a half. At the wrong time it takes over three hours. [ This Message was edited by: astrocrag on 2002-10-15 05:14 ]

Likely out. I'm going skiing at Jackson Hole that weekend! Woo Hoo! Airport - If you have the money, fly into the Palm Springs airport. It's 40 miles to Joshua Tree (the town). Ontario airport is 90 miles. LAX is 144 miles. San Diego airport is 162 miles. Las Vegas airport is 233 miles. San Diego or LAX would be the worst for dealing with traffic. My friend who lives in Del Mar (just north of San Diego) told me it takes him 3 - 4 hours depending on traffic. As a side note, check America West Airline's website for good deals on airfare to/from Palm Springs.

Try Ontario International Airport, Closer than San Diego, not too far from Palm Springs and it's near the I-10 Freeway, and fairly inexpensive! Best of luck!

Let me find out how many family spots there are and I'll let you all know. Don't worry everyone I'll make this work one way or another. We might have to spend about $5 a night to camp out or something like that. darn it I'm gonna make this work or I'm gonna realy mad . O.K. not so much... but I'll get something, the only thing is that we probally going to stay at Indian Cove I'll let you know tommorow. I'm gonna plan for -Zac

O.K here is the deal... I reserved a spot at Indian Cove for the 16th and checking out on the 19th. This spot holds 15 people and 5 cars, this cost me $60. At Indan cove they have Family spots that hold 6 people and 2 cars for $10 per night. There are 81 out of 101 of the family sites avaible as of now. I figure if I can get 5 of us to reserve one family site that will give us room for 45 people and 15 cars, and that might be good. So is there anyone out there that could help me out? I would jump for joy if we could get 7 of these sites. Let me know through this Forum if you can do this for me and everyone eles that is planning this. You can make these reservations by calling (800)365-2267or the web site reservations.nps.gov The site I have is Indian Cove Group site 10, so try to get it as close to that as posible. Thank You for all your help. -Zac

We're trying to work out the details. Hopefully we can make it. I checked on AOL today, and airline tickets were as low as $104 round trip to Ontario Airport - closest airport to J-Tree. Also, Alaska Air has roundtrip tickets for $190 to Ontario. I'll keep trying to make this trip work -- sounds like a blast! Bye for now . . ., and CLIMB ON!!! JULES

FYI For those unable to get in a site for the weekend ya'll are planning this hoedown, there is a bit of BLM land just a short drive from Indian Cove where primitive camping is allowed. You can't really leave any gear behind for the day, but it is both quite and legal. Just a thought for those concerned about getting an avaliable site.

Unless you purposefully drive through traffic San Diego to Joshua Tree is a reliable 2:15 to 2:30, depending on where in San Diego you start from. I've driven there probably 30-40 times and I don't think I've ever spent more than 2.5 hours of _driving_ time, including bad traffic days. Late at night, speeding, I've gone campsite to door in sub 2 hours. Someone who spends 3-4 hours getting there is doing something wrong. josh

I don't know where I'll be but here is some travel advice: 1. for airfares, try www.itasoftware.com, find the lowest fares and then try the airline websites. Also, try www.orbitz.com and www.expedia.com 2. for rental cars, try orbitz.com-I'm getting $73 per WEEK! out of LAX. It may be worth the extra drive time. Also, airfares are cheap and often less restricted to Las Vegas than to other cities. 3. I have rented hotel rooms just outside J-tree park for under $30. works out great if you share with 3-4 others richard Aiken

IN!! I could pick people up at ONT or PSP but let me know when and where. I live about 15 min east of ONT and work near PSP 7am to about 2pm Tues to Friday. So coming in, it could be ONT from 3pm-11pm thurs night, and PSP around 3pm friday (I don't HAVE to work Friday if I don't really want to though) and drop off at either place when ever. I have to give my boss like a week notice (he is a climber too and understands) so let's hook it up. Call if you need the help. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag 909 800 5537

I'm going to have about 4 people with me also so I'm thinking that 2 more sites and we should be fine. If we need to get more later I don't think that will be a problem. I'm thinking that there will be 35 to 40 people there, with the people that decide last minute and the people who cancel. -Zac

I am planning on being in Josh for at least a week in January and will try and plan on being there around the 16-19 weekend, so please keep a parking spot for me. I will probably be there before the 16th and will be at hidden valley (hoepfully), but will plan an excursion to meet you all. I will be coming from Chico and may have room for a body or two - depending on MY partner coming or not.

Beaware that this campground has it's own entrance, but has climbing within walking. If you have a qustion you can PM me and keep checking this post for info. Oh and if you reserve a spot can you please post that you did so I can talley the space we have.I'll have more Info about the gathering later (directions, local stores, and areas that we might hit) Hope to see you all there -Zac

One more thing. If people in college or whatever school can't make it for the Jan 17-19 Gathering, I would be more than willing to try to organize something for early January (2-10th) whether it be rides to and from the airport (let's coordinate on this) or just getting everyone together to drink beer and tell lies. PM me if this sounds like a plan. And dammit, try to get the 17th-19th off. It will be a blast!!! TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

take a plane to Ontario , the flights will be cheaper then palm springs. It's about 2 hrs away by car. But if you drive speedy, maybe sooner. Watch out for the wind-mill pass /could flip over your car if your not careful --driving fast, windows open, lots of breeze. Once had a rental car go from the far right to the left lane ,before I regained control. Guess someone wanted me to make it through....

I'm probably in. Not reserving a campsite or anything. The times I went, you didn't really need to, and that was on President's Day, too.

Camping Update: Wally Barker has started a climber's hostel. The land is graded only now. Nothing permanent constructed as of November 1st. It is up the street from Crossroads Cafe so it's closer than Indian Cave. It is on 18 acres of land and set low so no neighbors can see anything. This would be a great option for us to avoid paying for camping. Let's consider it as it's a huge plot of land. I would ask everyone to pitch in a dollar or two per night as this is going to be the New Era of Joshua Tree since Todd Gordon got married recently. Please visit the website www.womenclimb.com and scroll down the left side and click on JT Climber's Ranch. We are really lucky to have such a generous man as Wally to start this up (more to come in Vegas, Gunks, Boulder...) TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

Sounds like a good excuse for a road trip. If someone could give me directions that would be great. It is getting too cold to climb at Stone Hill. If anyone needs a or wants to go I got room.

I think the best way to go with camping will to stay with the sites we can reserve. I don't know how much room the new climbing hostle has but I have a feeling it will be full along with the first come sites in the park. I know it's a little more money but I don't want people to show up and risk having to camp in the outback. I think we still need a couple of sites, so like I said if your traveling you might want to reserve a site to ensure you have a place to stay -Zac

I'm in... Probably bring at least one newbie with me. I've been jonesing for Josh, so this sounds really good. As a last chance camping option, some of us could camp out at one of the backcountry boards ( I know a kick a$s spot) and meet somewhere in the morning.

Ah, to add one more bit of info to the travel discussion... Vegas airport to the Twentynine Palms entrance road can be driven in 2.5 hours if you take the back-roads. It's a bit under 200 miles, and is actually a very fun drive at night. As a completely unrelated, useless piece of information, the light beam coming out of the top of the Luxor hotel can be seen from 60 miles away. And there is a small chance I might be back in. The skiing adventure is starting to look shakey, in which case I may have to venture west yet again.

I believe the Luxor's beam is 1.2 million watts? Boy, just think what a headlamp that would be! Break out the shades, for sure. I am still plaaning on making the gathering, but will most likely be there sometime early in the week and thru the weekend. Planning on staying at Hidden Valley if I can get a spot, but will look you all up on the weekend.

I'm new on this system so I don't know if I've ever met any of you, but I can make it for the weekend of the 17th. My dad has a house in 29 Palms so I'll probably just stay there, not that it'd be much better than camping. He just uses one small ceramic heater for the whole place. -Cliff

I'll see you folks there. I'm heading out of Seattle for a reprieve from the abysmal gray wetness. I should be in Jtree shortly after the 1st, unless I stop in Mecca. If anybody wants to join me on my roadtrip, or needs to be picked up on the way, pm me. I'll be climbing Jtree and Hueco Jan - mid Feb. I'm planning a minimum of a month total roadtrip time, max 6-weeks. I'm on vacation, super flexible with my schedule and I'm totally open to any suggestions. So give me a shout if my galavanting even remotely overlaps with what-ever schemes you have or are plotting.

Just learned this last weekend that I have access to a "cabin" on 5 acres in 29 Palms. The cabin is not in too good of shape, but it can keep the wind and rain off of you and there is plenty of land to camp and party on if we need the extra space for the gathering. If anyone thinks they are going to need to use this please email me @ spice.e@usa.net Thanx! [ This Message was edited by: ride on 2002-12-02 09:54 ]

O.K. so I don't want anyone feeling sorry for themself's if they can't make it. Any true climbing bum would make it. That's right, quit your jobs, say to hell with my friends, you don't need any of that crap. There are rocks to climb, and in J-tree there are alot of rocks. I'm only saying this beacuse I'm kinda jobless and my friends won't talk to me cause I keep blowing them off for climbing. What can I say I don't want to be the only looser . Being a climbing bum rules. Thank God my parents don't5 kick me out . Don't drive angry -Zac

I think I need to re-iterate something here... This "cabin" I am talking about is not really livable, by that I mean there is no water and no heat which means no toilet and no stove, the road leading to it off of the 62 is deeeeeeep sand (I've had no problems, yet) but what it does have is walls, a roof, and maybe most importantly electricity and lots of space for tents, trailers and the like. its about 8.5 miles east of the 29 palms entrance and 15 or so from I.C. I was thinking of it more for people who arrive late and cannot get a campsite for whatever reason, I'll probably setup a camp out there for myself (one more space in I.C. for someone else, as I see it) and meet everyone early in the mornings somewhere. you can still let me know if you think you might need it by sending an email to: spice.e@usa.net and krack-head I want to hear your tapes!!! Danyelle, If you fly into the Ontiaro INT. airport on the 16th before noon I can pick you up, and if not addiroids was offering rides from the airports too. I will be heading out in the afternoon on the 19th, so I can drop you off to if you need. As far as accomodations go we are camping out at Indian Cove, and there will be room for you to throw a tent down. PM me if you need a ride or have any other questions about the gathering. -Zac

Zac, I need to fly in on the 15th. Airfare is just too much to come in on the 16th and only have Fri/Sat to climb. I won't be able to climb Sun (19th) because returning flights leave no later than 1pm. And the day of arrival is probably not a good climbing opportunity because by the time we get from ONT to JT it will be at least 2pm...Dark at 5pm. There is one alternative, if anyone will be able to drive me to San Diego for a return flight. Delta has a red-eye that doesn't leave until after 10pm. I could arrive ONT, leave SAN. Otherwise I need a ride & partner on the 15th. Danyelle

Yeah, like I said, I could pick someone up from the ONT airport around 3pm (+/- 1 hour or so) on THURSDAY, but then I would train some clients that night to make it worth it to come back from Palm Desert (1.5hours) so we could leave around 9pm or so for Josh. If you would compensate for gas and time, I could just make a special trip back and not train anyone, but I'm talking like $20. Not to be a cheap ass, but I have bills and gas (Montero) to pay too. I would really want to climb Fri-Sat-Sun, but again, if you bought beer for the trip, we could jet after a half day on Sunday to make a flight at 1pm (ONT is 2 hours from Josh). Just fire me a call, and we can work stuff out. I will be back in cell phone range 12/27/02, but leave a msg. Danyelle

Danyelle, Give me a call when you get a chance on Wensday if you can, I may be in J-Tree on Thursday. Don't worry we can work things out to get you out here. I can pick you up anytime and we'll find you a ride to San Diego for Sunday if that's what needs to happen. How about it people, is there anyone out there that can give her a ride to the SD airport on Sunday the 19th? Merry X-Mass everyone -Zac

Hey Gang, Happy Holidays; First off, this is not an official statement from the Joshua Tree National Park Service. Nor do I represent them. The following statement is being made by Joe Citizen who just happens to live in Joshua Tree and work on JOSAR (Joshua Tree Search And Rescue). I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about Hidden Valley campground and what’s up with New Years Eve this year. The NPS Rangers are going to have a VERY STRONG PRESENCE around Hidden Valley. Last years party was just too large and a tad out of control. The Park Service’s stance is that Hidden Valley campground does not belong to us climbers, but belongs to the public in general. Translated, our behaviour may be acceptable to us, but not Bob and Ethel, the retired couple from Nebraska. I am not saying in any way that all climbers are out of control. So, please, have a wonderful time climbing and enjoying the park, just be courteous of others around you! The JT Climbers ranch is up and running. You are welcome to stay there. At the moment, there is no water due to multiple breaks in the pipe. We hope to have it back up and running in a week or so. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Wally Barker (the owner of the ranch) has graciously allowed us to stay there when ever we please. Show your appreciation and respect by cleaning up after yourself and others. Wally and I spent the entire month of August this summer digging the whole and working get the ranch useable for the season. Have a safe, and happy New Years! If you see a white Suburban with a Yellow light bar, and signs that say “Search And Rescue” cruising around, feel free to stop us and say hi, or ask for help if you need it. WE ARE NOT Law Enforcement, we are group of volunteers. You can also spot team members by looking for the very bright yellow/gold shirts that say Joshua Tree Search And Rescue! Happy Holidays and climb safe! Robert Fonda

Zac, it's set!!! Travel plans are paid and I'm JT bound with Sauron. My itinerary remains as I recently posted. Dom's is as follows: Southwest Airlines Jan 15 Depart AUS 11:35am Arrive ONT 2:35pm Southwest Airlines Jan 19 Depart ONT 3:55pm Arrive AUS 10:50pm Anyone you know that might be able to give us seperate rides the day of departure might be best since I'm not leaving till much later and want to try and climb till afternoon on the 19th. If not I suppose I can cut my trip short, if I must, **sniff, sniff** About campsites...I'd like to camp with Dom as well, possibly in same tent (more details about that desire later), but definately same site. And I know Dom has met RRadam and Karen so if they would like to camp/climb with us that would be wonderful. Danyelle

pbcowboy... OUCH. Just realized (as I'm trying to book a room), that the Ouray Ice Festival is the same weekend. Hummm.... ice, rock?, ice, rock?, ice, rock? Damn, I hate these dilemmas! Looks like I might have to catch the next J-tree gathering. I'll certainly be jealous thinking of y'all in sunny socal as I'm freezing my booty off (well, you might be, too!). Perhaps I'll have a chance to meet/climb with some of you in Moab this spring. Have a great time. Cheers, -kelly.

HEY Everyone! I haven't been too vocal lately, but, yes I am still going to be at J-tree. I am also very glad to hear there are no poisonous creatures to worry about. I seem to attrack the poisonous ones. Can't wait to climb on real rock again. The winter weather finally hit us. I love the sun! See you all very soon. Take care and Happy New Year. Jules

Zac, Two more climbers joing me. My friend Mike, (he's not on RC.com) will be coming and Josh from Boulder Colorado will be arriving to join us on Thurs. I've lost you number but please give me a call so we can talk campsights. We will be driving ourselves in, decided to split a rental car and currently Dominic has an offer to return to the airport but a back-up plan wouldn't hurt just in case. Thanks so much for all your help. Hope everyone has a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I'm so excited...can't wait to meet everyone. Danyelle

Hey all, the more I read about this JTree trip, the more i'm interested. I know it's only a couple of weeks away, but does anyone still have room? I live and work in Ontario. hell, is there even room for one more body ? (who also probably needs to borrow a sleeping bag) I know that's a lot to ask, but hey, I figured I could at least try, it's JTREE!

I,m not sure how many people are accually showing up. But if everyone shows up that says they are we don't have thatb many spots. As of now there are alot of open spots at IC and I'm planning on getting more as needed when people arive. I cannot garuntee spaces for anyone other than a couple of people comming from out of state and my friends. So If your not sure if you have a place to throw down you might want to reserve a space. Also be ready to have to get your own when you get there or park your car out of the park. -Zac

Alright I reserved a site so I will be sure to have a place for my car and maybe a friends car. Still don't know how many will be coming besides me. I am more than willing to share some of my site, which I asked to be as close to Group Site 10 as possible. Looking forward to some fun, maybe a jaunt over to Corral Wall if it is cold, where there are a few warmer fun climbs or whatever people are up for. See ya soon Miker

OK, here's the deal... As many of you know, Karen and I are on a job at a Nuke in Maryland... My company pays for me to fly home with pay once a month to keep me happy. But they just paid for me to go home and climb J-Tree over New Year's, a tradition for Karen and I, so that's less than 3 weeks from this event. I'm gonna talk to the "suits and ties" about going home earlier to make this event. Send good vibes our way !!!

That's awesome that the founder of the Gatherings is going to be there. Or should I say it's coo' that the cofounders are going to be there since they are united as one. As far as camping goes: People, don't stress about this. There is a free place to stay right near Nomads (the gear store). It is right up the road from Crossroads. Wally Barker started a climber's hostel there, and until it is built, we can crash there as long as we are respectful of our fellow campers and the neighbors. Go to www.womenclimb.com and see the lower left corner for JT Climber's Hostel for a link to directions on how to get there. It's like 1 minute from the road to Joshua Tree. I will be staying there, so if anyone needs help, let's meet at IC Group Camp friday night and party, then find a few sober people to drive us there. Also, I will be arriving friday after work around 3pm, so if anyone knows where they might be around that time to climb for a few hours (like 2), and I could hook up with them let me know. Ya, the deal is... I only have a 15 person site, and I'm not gonna commit to giving any one a space. As of now I'm looking at 4 cars with me that leaves only 1 more. But I can keep about8 more people there, and I know that the others that have sites may be full on cars but space to throw down. At this time four are three options: 1- Go to www.reservations.nps.gov to reserve your own spot. 2- Hope you get a parking spot at someone's campsite. 3-Park out of Indian Cove (there is an "unoffical" place) and get a ride to and from car as needed. 4- Camp at Wally's like Paul said and drive to and from. So as you can see there will be a place for everyone to sleep but cars are a diffrent story. Oh and if you carpool with someone you don't know you get a SUPER SPECIAL STAR from me . It seems like there is gonna be alot of people comming and when I have time (I'm accually working now ) I'm gonna try to find out if everyone was serrious about comming that I don't know about. OH BABY 10 MORE DAYS -Zac

I'll be at Jtree, off and on, from Jan. 15 to Jan 21 (and may be there on the 14th, too). Anyone looking for a partner on days other than Jan 17-19, please PM or call. I'll be driving from LA (and back there)and can take a few riders (2 or 3). PM or call if you need a ride. Zac-count me as a definite.

Quote: rrradam started the first unoffical Gathering in J-Tree last year. That is how Events and Gatherings had been born. I can't really take credit for what Events & Gatherings has grown into. What I did last year was post in West Coast Partners "Who wants to come climb with us in J-Tree", and that grew into about 20 users, 10 from Ca, and 10 from other states around the country. It was a great time. 'ratstar' should really get the credit for the current large Events & Gatherings going off, as in response to the success of the J-Tree one last year, he started a real Gathering in SLC with was huge, 45 users. That in turn gave me the idea to create the E&G Forum, and Trevor wrote the code for the Events and a way to link it to the FP. So the real credit should go to 'ratstar'. All the credit for this Event in J-Tree should go to Zach (pbcowboy77) as he put all this together. BTW... Extreme Bop-It on the slackline.

Ok.... is anyone going out to Joshua Tree from PHOENIX on THURSDAY (1/16) evening?? If so, would you be willing to grab me from the airport around 9-ish pm and give me a lift?? I've been flying alot this fall, and between all the self-funded climbing trips, and wrecking my car, I'm a little cash strapped, and Phoenix is the cheapest place for me to fly to. I haven't bought the ticket yet, but if I do, I'd need to be back to the Phoenix airport around 4pm on Monday. Please PM me if anyone's schedule would work out close to this.

climbsomething/Hillary is IN!! And I feel I can take the liberty of throwing in jt512 (-Jay) too, since we move as a unit out in SoCal anyway I am not a Bop-It aficianado, but I will have Dee-Dee The Sport Climbing Donkey, also known as my Ass-Ass, who rides on my chalkbag. I'll probly also have my neon yellow pants, so you CAN'T MISS ME. Will be chillin' at the nightly campfires but not camping out, so no space worries there However, if anybody needs a wee 1-man (2 if you're close) backpacking tent (old-skoolin' it with the guylines and everything), or a sleeping bag for a shrimp (under 5'4), PM me and I'll blow the dust off my campin' gear Hey, speaking of short people and Bop-It, is artm showing? And did somebody say FULL MOON? ooh... funzies. Who's gonna be blinding all y'all night climbers with a camera flash? Quite possibly, climbsomething! Energy-energy-energy! And that's just from Nike Zac, I am cutting you off after 15 drinks, ok? Road trips... are extra-good therapy for me right now. I cannuh wait! ~I'm gonna climb with addiroids... and jt512 (duh!)... and and and... lots of other peepz! ~ Calm down, Hills...

The Bop-it has a messed up flick-it... Hillary don't forget about Future Games Wall over by Split Rocks....the easiest walk off in J-tree! It's even got a fun thin really hard to protect 5.11 (Bendix Claws) for Jay to play on.

O.K. I've given up un trying to keep the list on page 6 updated, I'm Sorry. And... I'm making the disclamer that if you are not sure where your gonna park your car... Good Luck. I've told everyone that camping is going to be tight. I'm not trying to be a but-head or anything, it's just I can't get a bigger site(and I've been trying twice a week) and don't have the money to get 10 sites for three nights at $10 a night. I may be worring to much about this camping thing, it will probally work out one way or another. I just don't want to be yelled at when someone does'nt have a place to park. Parking is my only worry so if you can try to carpool. With all that said... This is gonna be the best gathering ever . Oh ya, don't forget to bring firewood all you SO Cal people. Don't make the out of state people bring some. -Zac

Is anyone going on Thursday night or early Friday morning, with the intent of climbing on Friday? Also, I'm wondering if people are planning to stick around Sunday night to climb on Monday? I'm trying to figure out transportation arrangements and flight times and such, and want to find out if I'll have someone to climb with if I fly out Thursday night and take a red-eye return flight Monday night. Also, is there anyone that could hook me up with a ride to and from LAX on those days (Thurs night, Mon night)?? Maybe we should start a new thread for "transportation/carpool arrangements", since this one is getting pretty damn long (165 posts and counting).

Zac, Don't worry everything will turn out great and there is a community parking area at the end of the road for overflow parking. But it could be a little risky. Meaning they can't guaranteed safety of your car.

Static, your with me. I DON'T HAVE ANYMORE ROOM, sorry IF anyone else needs a ride from the Santa Barbara/Ventura area, or on the way from Ventura area to JT, PM me, and I'll pick you up, I'll have room for 1 more, I'm sure. Hey its Josh, we can squeeze. Parking and camping will work itself out. IF anyone needs a place to park a few cars, we could use my friends 5 acres in 29 palms for that. We'll figure out something, Hey, we're climbers, some of the best "problem" solvers on the planet. [ This Message was edited by: ride on 2003-01-10 16:28 ]

I know, I'm sure everything is gonna work out. It's just the fact that I got 5 PM's at the same time asking about the group site and parking, and there is room to camp but none to park. Oh, and I'll be there on Thursday trying to climb and may not leave untill Monday. 8 more days and I'm in J-Tree again -Zac [ This Message was edited by: pbcowboy77 on 2003-01-09 10:33 ]

Just my 2cents. The Rangers are horrible t there at j.tree. I was there from the night of the 29 through yesterday afternoon,at Hidden Valley. On New Years eve, they gave me a 50dollar ticket for parking. They went around to every campsite, logged in licenses, got everyone names and stood around and asked a multitude of obnoxious questions. There presence is stressful , they must have had 30 cars all over. With blocks, you'd think they're was terrorists in the park. Whatever pleasure could be gained from a new years eve was destroyed by them sitting in there large vans, literally canvassing. you would have thought it was the day after 9/11. I have no idea about indian cove, I've never climbed there. But If the same Rangers that are from Hidden Valley are there, and they don't like something, watch out. They are not laid back about anything, especially too many cars and camping. I truly hope things work out for this gathering, I'm just trying to prepare you,for what it was really like just a week ago,and what you might have to contend with. It's better to "prepare for the worst, and hope for the best". Maybe the Rangers don't go to Indian Cove,( best not to forewarn them either.) Last years New Years Eve party, they had no warning and it was great.!! [ This Message was edited by: enigma on 2003-01-09 11:40 ]

enigma, I was in the park before new years (from 26th through 29th) at Ryan campground, and found the rangers to be very polite and helpful. As far as your citation goes ... well, you broke the rules, so you had to pay. The rangers were very tollerant when I was there, going out of their way to let people know the rules as they came into the park, and even leaving printed fliers at every campsite explaining in very clear detail what would and would not be tollerated. 2 cars, 3 tents, 6 people maximum per campsite. Like it or not, everyone was warned multiple times and in multiple ways, and they even let it slide for the days prior to New Years Eve, but made it very clear they would be enforcing that day. Don't be upset with them for doing their job and cracking down on the people who chose to break the rules despite being warned over and over again.

Corey, fly into Palm Springs. If you buy the ticket early enough it wont be much diff- then Ontario and it's closer. I would give you a ride but I can't commit, sorry. You might try calling the Uprising Rock Climbing Center in Palm Springs and find out if anyone there would be going. The rock center is just 2 to 5 minutes from the PS airport. Have fun!

Quote: Tradguy you weren't even there on new years eve ,(you argument is very weak),you have no idea what went down in hidden valley. You're right, enigma, I wasn't there. I was in Tucson instead having a good time, because the rangers basically flat out told people they were going to crack down on everything on New Years Eve - parking, noise, alcohol, the whole shebang. They pretty much said that the previous year was out of control, and they weren't going to allow it this year. That was enough of a warning for me to head elsewhere, because as much as I love Joshua Tree and drinking beer and whooping it up with fellow climbers, it was abundantly clear that the $#!& was going to hit the fan, and I didn't want to be around for the splatter. Sorry you got busted. Oh yea, I almost forgot.... I bought my plane ticket and rented a car. Will be there Thursday night (late) through Monday night with a fellow climbing from Indiana. If anyone needs a lift out from LAX at around 11:30 pm Thursday, let me know. I might try to find this climber's hostel/ranch thing, since figuring out where people are at 2 am in Indian Cove (which I've never been to before) could be tough. Yeah, the rangers were being unusally strict on New Years Eve. My relations with them have always been cordial. They enforce the rules, which is their job, but, in my experience, they've always been polite about it. Even on New Years they were cutting some slack. They let Zac park illegally, giving him a parking permit that read, "Climber has no parking spot. Climber too drunk to move." See the picture of it, linked in a post above. -Jay

Well maybe the rangers are more tolerant in Indian Cove, In hidden valley it was like "big brother is watching". Hey I don't go for that at all, it wasn't just a ticket, there presence was horrible.Get it. Last year's New Years eve was great, we had a fashion show, naked men and women, prizes and 255 people. Lets hope they are in Hidden Valley during the gathering, instead of Indian Cove. I hope no-one has mentioned this to the ranger police.

We gave Ranger Dave a beer and a homemade "hot tomale", so he was hooked up. I also have had nothing but positive experiences with the rangers. 'trad'... When do you fly in to LAX ??? Karen and I fly in around 10PM Thurday to LAX, so if you are there, you can crash at my house, then ride out with us Friday morning.

rrradam.... I'm arriving at 11:18 pm into LAX with a semi-novice climber in tow. She's fairly new - been climbing indoors regularly, but not too much outdoors. The offer of the ride out and accomodations is appreciated, but out return tickets are for 10:35 pm MONDAY. Are you sticking around to climb Monday, or are you leaving on Sunday? I guess we were hoping to still be able to climb Monday, thus maximizing the climbing vs cost ratio. Or if anyone else if returning Monday afternoon that could drop us off at LAX, that would be super cool. Let me know.

Ack! I just spent $110 to register for a fencing tournament that weekend so I won't be able to make it. I did reserve a campsite though, not sure if it is transferable.

Yep, after much deliberation (and the fact that the training i was supposed to attend isn't gonna happen) i've decided to join the party. Looks like i'll probably be down there on Thurs? and staying till i can't find anyone to climb with anymore. So if anybody is planning on staying past the weekend send me a message. I'm free to roadtrip til mid-feb. Kelly

PLEASE READ THIS POST The owners of this website have been contacted by the U.S. Park Service Ranger. There is some concern about parking and or camping illegally. Adam is trying to contact them to clarify these concerns. Let's respect the rules of this Amazing place, and abide by their rules, as it is well deserved. Adam will POST, as soon as he's able to contact the Park Service Ranger...to clarify the concerns. THANKS ALL ~T

Nobody worry about all this, I have an in (Ranger Dave) . Jusk Kidding, but really don't worry about anything, if there's no room for your car then you have to get a spot or park it at the climbers ranch or something and get a ride back. Someone also mentioned something about a plot of land in 29 Palms, if it's cool with them maybey we can park some cars there. We are not gonna have any problems with the rangers, and let's stop talking smack about them. I have had nothing but good experiences with them, and plan on no problems. Just be aware of the parking problems and try to carpool, and if you don't have your own campsite, be prepared to have to deal with it on your own. All of the parking for the group site is taken and most of the other sites as well. -Zac

Did they ask how many powerbars we'll need too.??? Can't help if I have some intutive energy to forewarn my climbing buddies, of impending circumstances. Boy I bet they'll have their fleet now,out and ready waiting for the gathering. It could be a good time to change the date or the venue. I guess it would be too much trouble.Oh well,I tried. Hope its fun, anyway.

OK, still haven't heard back from the ranger in regards to the message I left him regarding his concerns. He didn't give any details in the email he sent, so I was "assuming" he had concerns about possible illegal camping and parking. They are enforcing these rules due to many climbers abusing the rules. He may also be just trying to help us as stated above in another reply. I will call him first thing Moday morning. 'trad'... Karen and I fly in at 10:44PM Thursday. We will wait for you if you like, and you can feel free to crash at my house, then leave early Friday morning for the park. We fly out Monday at 9:40AM, so if this is also good for you, you can save on the cost of a rental. Let me know brutha.

The RANGERS are great at J-Tree!!! They are doing their job and protecting the land. We as climbers should always respect the rangers and the land. The rangers for Hidden Valley are the same for Indian Cove!!!

I don't see why we could not park some cars out by the "cabin" if we have to, might be a pain in the arse, but if we have to we have to. The road out to it is fairly deep sand but is passable. There is room (I'm thinking) for more than a few 4x's (deeper sand, just desert) and probably 3-4 normal vehicles, but maybe more, not too sure. if the recent rains have packed the sand enough we will have no problems if we need it. and Static what the hell are you talking about??? you better get it together before you get in the car with me, boy!! Almost Time!!!! Anyhoo, I am heading out from the South Bay area (Torrance/Lakewood) on Friday afternoon ~2ish. Anyone wanna carpool or hitch a ride? I will be coming back Sunday evening. I have a small car so small people without much stuff or two really hot girls should fill the car up nicely.... SO anybody know what they are gonna climb?? I saw a post asking about sub 5.8 stuff and Indian Cove has it's fair share of easy. I am hoping to climb some 9s and 10s and maybe follow an 11 or lead it if enough people call me a poseur or wussy. Maybe Corral Wall would be fun with a little hiking and some warm exposure if it is chilly. Anyway, I have a site and no one to share it with so far, so let me know. I asked to be near Group Site 10, but no rangers called me yet....*sniff*....Do I Offend? See ya'll sooner miker

I'm heading out Friday morning and leaving Saturday evening. I was originally planning on bouldering only, but it looks like I may have to suit up and drag Adam up "Monaco" if everyone is going to be in Indian Cove. Any other takers for some bouldering during the day?

Hey Ride,so tell all of the interested parties exactly where this cabin is? I heard organic trash can be used as composte. We probably don't have enough time for a through cleansing of "S". So anyone can you tell me the best routes in Indian Cove? Are there any classics? Thanks for the weather JT. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.

Hmm... forecast I saw on weather.com for the town of Joshua Tree showed mid-60's through the weekend for highs, mid to upper 30's for lows. Twentynine Palms was upper 60's for highs, low 40's for lows. Either way, it sounds like great weather. Much better than highs in 20's like it's supposed to be here in Indiana.

Thanks to Adam I had a 9am wake up call from a Ranger . By the way people I work late so don't call me before noon . So Ranger Don Roberts and I talked, and all is cool. He was a really nice guy and offered any help that we needed. His concern was the amount of people comming, beacuse if you have over a certin number of people youneed a permit. We do not exceed that number, so all is good. We also had a talk about the impact that we are going to have on the park, and he is convinced that we will not be a problem. So let's keep in mind to keep our impact as low as possibal and leave the park cleaner than it was when we got there. Oh yes, I'm gonna climb La Reina -Zac

I spoke with the ranger, and he was under the impression that over 100 people would be all in one site. I told him this was not so, and also explained that the vast majority of us "understand and support the rules at the park." He is satisfied... So we need to camp, park, and and act responsibly. See you there.

Monaco was thin and stout up at the top. I'm up for the park propper, as the only thing I want to tick in Indian Cove is Lascivious Conduct... It kicked my ass last time. I'll tick that on Friday.

Art, I read that article earlier today. I can't tell if they are for real or not. As far as I know that Eagle Mountain dump idea was put to rest a few years ago. Also, I have never heard of someone building "a new city" anywhere near the Park. Do you have any further details about these supposed threats to JT? Curt

Static- I'm telling the truth, you know Ride is a stoner, just in case someone else doesn't want to belayed by him. Just check out his posts on the subject. Sure people lead stoned and belay that way,but full clarity isn't there. Good Luck . See you all at the gathering.Peace out.(for you micronut) and rradam looks like a great lead above.

Got a call from David Craft one of the rangers up at Indian cove today and he said that he put all our sites togheter and as close as he could to site the group site and that they'll assign sites when we get up there but that we can change them around amongst ourselves however we want due to some sites fitting bigger tents and such, and that he dosent care how we end up doing it. The sites are going to marked off in case we get there when noone is on duty at the front. the site numbers are 40,41,42,43,45. the people he said on the phone to tell were (in username): Coreyr Cloudbreak Swohletz climbingcowboy-me and i couldnt understand the last name something like Burlingain or something once again the rangers were colol enough to go outta there way to call and let us know to make it easier on us. his #760-362-4367 Geoff

It can be far, but I'm sure the rangers will shuffel you around once you get there. On new Year's I had the absoultly farthest spot from the group sites. Needless to say I drove to the campfire everynight, and hitched a ride on New Year's eve. But If your far you can drive back and forth. -Zac

I spoke with Ranger Dave yesterday as well. The dude was cool as f#@k! Man, he talked my ear off for like 15 minutes....lol! Seems like they're going out of their way to get us all set up out there. How far away from Group Site 10 is site 99? TooBig, that sucks they put you way out there. Those of us with "family sites" are in 40-45. Anydayz, should be soooooooooo FUN, and I'm looking foward to meeting so many of you. Latz, marc

Site 99 is the site I was in on New Year's. I think it's The Farthest Sitefrom the gruopsites . If you are in that site you should try to change it when you check in. Sorry to big but you have a couple of great climbs in your back yard. -Zac

Well I called Mr Ranger as the list of names posted earlier did not include me, but he said I am in the midst of it, tentatively, in site 42. See you all there. So what is the situation on wood? I will bring some to add to the group site 10 pile. Also who's bringing the barbecue? Or should I just wrap everything in Aluminum Foil and throw it on the fire?? Anyhoo, I am chomping at the bit here at work. Anyone interested in a hike out into the Wonderland to Super Dome or the mating Grotto or one of those fun uncrowded little bumps o' rock. Also has anyone done Figures on A Landscape? That is also on my list of must dos. ttfn miker

ahhh....figures.... Went to the Super Dome last week. Be prepared for a hike! 4 plus miles to Willow Hole, then another 1/2 mile or so of boulder hopping to the base. I didn't have the balls for the Last Unicorn, though. It looked waaay scary to the second bolt....for leader and follower.

Yeah Zac... It's a long way to Group Site 10. I called this morning to check again but no dice. The ranger I talked to said that it is actually pretty close to the Group Site because you can cut around the back of Campfire Wall. I've never tried it, but if that's the case it should be fine. Site 99 is the one that's right under Aparition Rock right? No worries. It's all good!

Figures is by far the best climb I have ever done in my life. I still regularly do it and am looking at a poster on my wall at work that a friend made for me from a photo when I was on it for the first time a few years back. Definitely do it, but beware the end of the first pitch. Stay low young man, stay low....

I'm so excited about the trip this weekend, and the full moon, for full-out craziness, wahooooooo! I do have one Q ... what phone number are you guys calling to find out a campsite number? I reserved one at Indian Cove ... for up to 6 people, 3 tents, 2 cars. So far we just have just one car and 2 people, leaving from the Bay Area, but I have no idea what campsite number. Can anybody out there help, pleeeeeease?

O.K. everyone. I'm packed and ready, leaving in 10 minutes . So I think there is some room at IC for people that don't have a site yet, so come and check before you head to aanywhere eles. If your looking for me: Friday I'll be in IC climbing, I have a silver 2door explorer, with a Five Ten sticker. Or I'll be in Group Site 10 Saturday and Sunday I'll be in the main park if it's not too windy. I'll keep a post on the BB at Hiden Valley. And at night I'll be the one with a New Castel in my hand on the slack line in group site 10. Can't wait to see all of you there. I'm out, see you on the rock -Zac

T and I will be hitting lower dairy queen wall at about 8 on Saturday morning. Toobigtoclimb (Brian) told me about some routes I should do there. Figure it will be a good place to start. Then it’s off to Wonderland. There are a few routes I want to tick while she’s down. Can’t wait to see everyone! ~Hanger

Got in last night... Would be on my way there, but I have to wait for America West to bring my rack to me. Seems my backpack with my entire rack and my wife's bag with her clothes went on another plane. At least it showed up, so I should be there by 2-3PM. I forgot the Bop-It, but I'm sure T has her's.

*packing* --enough underwear for the weekend... check --techie Patagonia layers, down and a backup beanie cap, in case I should lose one... check --camera and 7 rolls of film (3 different speeds)... check --guidebooks, gear, and chalk (in original container so the security dudes don't take me out )... check --headlamp, batteries, glasses, cell phone, clandestine nail clipper... check --security documents so I may board the plane... check Plus all the other trappings... 5 hours and I'll be on a *plane* high in tha sky! I am a VERY new climber. I've only been to the gym a couple of times. I am REALLY anxious and excited to learn, improve, and get out on some rock. I will be in the J-Tree area this weekend and I was wondering how welcome I would be with all you experienced climbers. Is there usually a hostile feeling towards newcomers. I figure the best way to learn is to be around new climbers, but I dont want to feel like I am in anybodys way, or like I am a burden to peoples personal climbing time. I am excited, athletic, and willing to listen.
