Those stores bother me just on basis. I was in this new store that is JUST like Abercrombie and Fitch, but it's called Hollister or something. It sells all these clothes with stuff like, "Surf Competition, Hollister, CA." Hollister CA is totally landlocked. It's a nice place to go hang gliding and it's about an hour from good climbing, but also about an hour and a half from good waves. I'm sad when I see climbing hyped on TV or whatever. How many of you have seen the deodorant commercial with the guy on what looks like 5.2 and on top rope and talking about how he is pushing it to the extreme? There is, of course, a climbing scene, and I have bought into it, too. I have La Sportiva flip flops and Prana gear (bought on sale), but to be honest, I think Prana sucks. The shirts look nice on me, but the pants don't last for a month. At least not the cotton chick pants. I had to send them back to Prana for a replacement. If tech gear with recognizable logos makes you feel good and included, that's cool. Just like people with scars on their hands are a mark of a similar interest, clothes help identify. Just have a sense of humor about it. And preppy is great, if I'm not in climbing gear, Banana Republic clearance all the way!

Yes, Prana quality has gone to hell. I do own a few things by them, but they were all given to me as gifts. As far as the video is concerned, the only problem I have with it is the attitude with which they approached rock climbing. They weren't out there thinking about climbing, they were out there to pose and get face time. By the way they were acting, I am surprised they weren't wearing baseball caps with greek letters on them while standing next to a keg. M@

I like how people think that their total Prana outfit is somehow made OK by the fact that they bought that stuff ON SALE. OMG. If you wear Prana or Royal Robbins or Patagucci, you are buying into the same sort of stereotypes that make A&F want climbers to buy their clothes. I am not saying I am above that, although the extent of my climbing apparel appears to be t-shirts from comps and prodeals, BUT TO THINK THAT YOU ARE SOMEHOW BETTER CUZ YOU WEAR PRANA OR "ON SALE" PRANA IS IGNORANT. Marketing is a tool. A more valuable one than most of those who have posted to this thread. Spelled out for the stupid: You are a tool.

Nah, I think the whole point is that if we see something we like the looks of or view as functional, we will buy it, BUT we won't sell our souls for it. I'll be damned if I pay $50 bucks for a shirt and then go climbing in it. Now, if someone GIVES me an AF shirt or pair of pants, I would gladly climb in it assuming is was comfortable, etc. I just think the video was laughable. Those models probably want to start the Abercrombie and Fitch School for Kids Who Can't Read and Want To Do Other Stuff Too. (is that how it went? I can't remember.) Prana is at least as expensive as A&F. Niche fashion whoring is just as bad.

As usual Headcrak is right. I also hate it when people justify what they own by saying that they got it on sale or got it as a gift. Although getting it pro-deal or given to you by the company is no better. If you are spending this much time and effort thinking about the labels you are wearing and the labels that the ambiguously gay duo on that show are wearing, maybe you should be doing something else. Face it, climbing is cool. That is probably the reason every single one of us started climbing. And at one point or another we were all just as stupid as that dumbass playing the harmonica and talking about "climbing is just totally awesome and extreme". If it surprises you that A&F wants to tap into the market of energetic, active, 20-somethings then you are stupid. That show wasn't much different than those Trailside episodes that were on PBS. Only these people were wearing A&F clothes instead of patagonia clothes. You all remind me of the music snobs who say things like "Yea, radiohead was cool and all until they got all popular and now they suck" Besides Lauren Lee is hot and anytime anybody wants to put her on a tv show, I am all for it.

clothing is over rated Also, I think the key reason why I wouldn't want to wear any A&F shmack is because of those stupid catologues. Everyone is way too dramatic for me.

The movie link to the A&F commercial doen't work for me for some reason. The pop-up window finishes loading (after 2 seconds) with a blank image. I've tried this with 2 different PCs and 2 different internet conenctions. Does anyone have this movie linked in a different location?

I have not seen the ad although I don't find it so surprising that A&F hooked up with climbing. Climbing is not a fringe sport anymore. Climbing has become relatively comfortable and accessable to the masses. Easy approaches, cushy harnesses, sticky rubber, bolts to the top, no harrowing committments (just go boulder). Perfect for the A&F customer. The romantic idea of climbers as wild adventurers is quickly becoming a myth. I have only climbed 6yrs now and I am a product of its proliferation. It's bittersweet. If you need to dinstinquish yourself from the drones get a FA in the Baffin Islands or something like that. Who cares about the clothes Troy

I've heard mention from these posts that A&F is USING Climbers in there ads. Not Sponsoring climbers. FORD, Nissan, BofA, State of California, Deodorant products, etc..... The list goes on and on - they all use climbers in the ads and commercials. Prana, patagonia, Rope Gun, etc... all actually sponsor climbers.

I have kind of split decisions on this, I am a young guy out to impress the ladies so you know im going to care about what I wear, so I wear a@f, ae and that sort of stuff. But when it comes to climbing a@F makes me sick. I dont think they should be allowed. DaggerX

It's sponsor money going to poor climbers. Deal with it.
