Excellent. What do you like about it? I'm curious - does it have any sexy features, something no other chalk bag sports? Or is it your basic chalk bag in terms of features? What's it made out of? I'm just wondering what a climber gets for the moolah? DMT

Fair Question. I have pretty beefy mitts, and the bag has a really large and stiff opening, it's made of a bunch of synthetic materials, has a nice zippered stash pocket big enough for car keys, rap rings and a power bar. Not to mention a built-in bottle opener. I agree $35 is quite steep - but compared to the Mammut "Starter Kit" chalk bag I was using prior, the Arc'Teryx is amazing.

good for you, aj. the consumer economy is in the tank, outdoor is getting hit harder than anyone, and the redeployments to afghanistan will only underwrite so much more federal investment in in petroleum-based technical apparel. plus you bought it at a local retailer. now if only you'd do yer shopping in california, maybe my state could generate enuf sales tax revenue to start funding education once again.

k.l.k wrote: attaboy dingus, ddt loves you: Hehe... uh, no. Thanks for the reply austinj. Plastic bottle opener and schoeller fabric, check. As an aside I have big mitts too and for a long time it was almost impossible for me to find chalk bags that I could get my entire hand (including the wrist) into the bag. I had friend in the biz make me a couple, plus I bought one off the shelf from him. I'm about to retire my last Tuttle. End of an era for me. I bought it in the mid-90s and didn't use it till 2004 or so! DMT

Curt When I clicked that ad and read the features, you were the first person I thought of. I presumed that folks there still remembered you in some distant, hating-the-in-laws-but-recalling-them-too sort of way, and had you in mind. I actually paid a jillion bux for my current model. BBZ I picked up at "Bleau when I'd forgotten my own. Hideous, retro-80s neon pink and turquoise. Massive, cement-mixer volume. Looks a lot better now that it's sun-faded.

I also would not pay $35 for a chalk bag, (nothing against arcteryx) and in fact my solution for a chalk bag was to make my own. Bigger opening, stiff rim to keep it open, and for mine carhartt brown duck cloth exerior - whats not to like?

It seems most of the replies here are coming from men. We don't get it. A couple of years ago, I was at the gym with my 6-year old granddaughter. She said, "Look at that girl's chalk bag." I looked at it and didn't notice anything special. She then told me to look at mine. I was still clueless. She finally said that the girl's chalk bag was a pretty yellow with nice flowers on it and mine was "just black". Her older brother never noticed anything like that while climbing with me at the gym. Yeah, but those are all mom-n-pop ops designing small-run and one-offs in their garages. except maybe for rhb, but those also look pretty one-at-a-time. Edit to add: You can get that Rose Tattoo one from groovee for only 25 bux. What Arc T has done here, and it's brilliant, really, is create a big run item with mass sourcing and chinese production, that sells for a custom-made price. The real hook, here, is the plastic church key. Anyone could, of course, tack a lightweight one onto a chalkbag, but Arc T either sourced or (heaven help us) designed a dedicated chalkbag church key. Frickin genius.

camhead wrote: I never even realized they had a bottle opener on them. Better check the model: Arc T is thorough, and they have others at different (i.e., lower) price points. That company has done some serious, thoughtful study of luxury branding. I'd really like to trash them a good deal more, but I also have to admit that they've fairly consistently offered some of the most elegant design in outdoor apparel. Although I'm not terribly impressed by the chalk bag, since it's a recycled early '90s design with a cheap-ass plastic churchkey tacked on. Sort of a luxury version of a Berkeley art car.

Correction: it's made in the Philippines. Thanks for the catch. I can no longer keep up with outsourcing patterns, now that Indonesia, Vietnam and the Phiippines rotate in and out of the picture with the change of contractual seasons. Now all we need is for the free-lance designer who first sketched the churchkey to step up and contribute some of the original CAD documents to the thread.

I think that the buckle that attaches the belt to the bag doubles as a bottle opener. I'm not sure, though. I'll get back on whether it works on a beer bottle later tonight after I'm done writing for the day; hehehe.

I got one and love it. I got big mitts so I like the big size. Verve had (has?) a really nice bag with a large opening also. oh, btw, I wouldn't pay $35 for it either. eBay!!!

Grandpa.calm You just described my two kids. My daughter would be totally for getting that chalkbag, if she were to see one.

So, does anyone else get the feeling that this entire sport– pro sponsorships, expeditions, pro-deals, etc.– rides on the back of six-figure and up yuppies who think nothing of dropping $35 on a chalkbag, $70 on a rope, or $120 on a sweatshirt just for a weekend of guided toproping?

To an extent...yes. I worked in a gear-shop, and nothing pissed me off more than some guy coming in and dropping 500 bucks on an arcteryx shell just to wear around campus. But in the other hand, I can see why people justify the cost. I personally love arcteryx. I think they make an excellent product that wears like iron. After spending 8 hours in a hard rain mapping geology in the middle of no-where, I was pretty happy I had that proshell.

Well a continued downturn in retail will likely curb folks enthusiasm for high dollar name brand outdoor gear. Soon it will become cool again to have a plastic pancho and army surplus pants. The high price folks are going to have to tighten the belt to survive. Maybe they already have. But maybe the economy will turn around before we lose the best gear mfgs. Face it - climbing gear is 100% luxury item. DMT

For sure man. I still go back every once and a while and put in a shift at the store. Because of the economy, this season has been horribly slow. You go into a outdoor store, and pretty much everything is a luxury item.

If you consider a $70 rope to be splurging on rope, then I want to know where the fuck you're buying your ropes!
