My mom just found out that someone stole her debit card information from a gas station in Iowa we stopped at. Someone bought $500 worth a perfume on her dime. Does anyone know if she's protected by the bank like a credit card, or is she SOL because she used it as debit? On the phone with my bank requesting a new card now, just in case.

I would say it's a SOL case being a debit card... but depends on the bank. Sometimes they look at the case in detail and see if it's an isolated weird purchase. I mean... who steals a card and then goes and buys 500 bucks of purfume with it?

Had they been fraudulant charges, I would have been reimbursed for them. smells suspicious, Jay

Oh and the fraud squad should be on that. Gas station attendants are notorious for this and I am sure there are more victims than just your mom.

Maybe that means the bank did catch it and they were able to tell her where it happened? I'm just curious, I usually run my debit card as credit anyway to earn points, and because I heard about gas station skimming. Thing is, I think she was running it as credit too...I think...here's hoping, she certainly doesn't have $500 to lose.

If someone steals your credit card info, its the credit card company's problem. If someone steals your debit card info, it's your problem.

That sucks, and no, she's not protected like a credit card. I'd still fight, but it's an uphill battle on this one.
