Whatever, your list also says that India does better than us.

Sure, their output is higher, but the general population is much better off here

The measure of a country is more than just how much money it throws around...

I think how it treats its poor/sick/children/elderly is a better indicator.

There's rich assholes everywhere

valid point, but money allows for various services to be available.

my point was that Brasil is without a doubt not a third world country. It's problem is it's massive wealth gap (one of the largest in the world), but the middle class has erupted the past 15 years or so (a little less) such that a middle-class life is not unlike a middle class life in north america. in some ways it's worse, but in others it is better.

for instance, in Chile, there is a huge middle class, but purchasing power is relatively weak. they are comfortable in their lives and are not poor by any measure, but they spend a lot of money to maintain the status quo. there isn't a lot of money to be spread around. chileans find it difficult to travel, for instance, beyond Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina because it is very expensive for them to do so.

in Brasil, however, things are much more expensive and they make quite a bit more than in Chile, but they also have a lot more extra money to throw around. in general, their lives are more comfortable (better homes, better access to vehicles, better access to technology, etc). brasilians travel the world fairly easily because they have the ability to do so.

Purchasing Power is a good way to judge the country's ability to make money and spend it. Of course, it says nothing of it's efficiency. Brasil is a tad bit shy of "efficient? what the hell is that?" on the efficiency scale.
