In reply to: yet teeming masses congregate there regularly. What does that say for the standards of the area? As for standards and who set them: haven't you heard of Jim Holloway, Skip Guerin, Dan Michael, Pat Ament, John Gill, Bob Williams, John Sherman, Paul Hagan, Bob Poling, Dan Stone and so on...

Im not going to argue with that, or you for that matter. The bottom line is that everyone has personal preferences and that mine do not happen to include most of the areas you speak of.

In reply to: how do you even define mecca? Funny enough, I don't have to define mecca. The term is derived from the city Mecca, spiritual epicenter for thousands of muslims. It is a place where people make pilgrimage because it is the holoiest of holies. So yeah... the local population of Castle Hill makes it kind of a mecca for limestone enthusiasts. It is a place they travel thousands of miles to to experience the stark beauty of the place and climb it's heavenly problems. Just like Klem Loskot, Sharma, the Swainger bros and numerous others have travelled to Hampi, India... enduring hellacious travel to climb some where IMPORTANT. Not freakin makin the drive up the 17 to your local boldering "mecca".... And yeah, I was just at Joes less than a year ago. Face it, McKinney Falls State Park is more world class than almost ANY of your local areas... but it is nowhere near a "mecca." It's not the Underground, for chrissakes. And heres a photo of boldering on the Medina river near San Antonio... http://www.0friction.com/...friction_pic_397.jpg Also... to touch on the front range issue. The front range is not a bouldering mecca. Sorry... RMNP is one though. You have to WORK to get up there and then deal with lots of very hard problems, way off the deck. Dave Graham makes a yearly pilgrimage there. It is a holy place. Horsetooth ?!?!? sucks. Unless you like that sheisty offvert angle that passes for "steep"in Colorado. I still don't understand why John gill's favorite stone is Dakota Sand... I guess he just hasn't been to Roger's Park yet.

when you have groups of people traveling from a few thousand miles away somewhat often, that area must have something big going for it eh? Kind of important....

In my opinion, colorado bouldering south of fort collins is largely sub-par but anyone who says that horsetooth "sucks" is either an idiot or has never really been there.

No, that problem looked great, tell me this, though-is your opinion of the draw colored by the fact that you arent able to do the easiest of hike-fests there?

curt and andy, i suspect this entire dialogue is a calculated diversion to draw attention away from the fact that neither of you guys has had the nerve to take on the most burly of all north american bouldering areas -- mount woodson, where the rock is prime, the problems high, and the landings poor. a situation that i insist we rectify this winter. curt, you get to burn me off at glorias. andy, i have to eat your dust at the draw. it's my turn. i'll drive. heh.

Hah. Whats the latest Fred Nicole testpiece at Woodson ?!?! Front range WAS mecca 40 years ago. Nowadays, quality reigns supreme and if the front Range and Rocklands, Sa traded places, rocklands would see twice the traffic and the Front Range would see NIL. There are some places worth travelling halfway across teh globe to visit... Hueco, the underground, Squish... You need to seriously evaluate your definition of Mecca.

Clueless about what, criscokid ?!?! I spent the 98 season at Hueco and met more euros than 10 years worth of front range climbing. I know euros who will hike into the Underground, but won't touch Oak Flats. Certain places are worth making a pilgrimage. Everyone's home area is NOT a mecca. If you haven't spent a season or two at Hueco, you judt don't know... You can sit there and call me ignorant all you like, but the fact remains: I have seen as many or more boldering areas across this continent as Curt or any of these oldskoll chuffwits and I know that Glorias, the Front Range and Woodson are NOT world class areas. If I was a spraylord namedropper, I could list up to 4 elite and well traveled climbers who agree. But I am not. Although... I will send your project in my flipflops.

Sorry, I was in Hueco in 85, 86 and 87, way before you futon-carrying-wankers showed up thinking that you discover the new sport of bouldering. Lox wrote: Everyone's home area is NOT a mecca. Yes, you are right about that. But some places have played an important role in the development of the sport and the FR just happens to be one of those places.
