The Access Committe of the Toronto section of the ACC is organizing a spring clean-up/ trail work day at Nemo and Rattlesnake this April. Mountain Equipment Co-op is providing the use of a "magic bus" departing from their store in the morning and returning in the evening. The clean-up will occur at the end of April with an exact date and timings to follow. Please come out and join the Access Committe in supporting the Halton Regional Conservation Authority in their continued support of climbing access in Halton Region!

Keep posted for more details this week or contact me through e-mail.

Are you planning on doing both Nemo and Rattlesnake in a single day, or are these two seperate ventures?

The tentative plan is to spend the morning at Nemo doing some trail work and then transport over to Rattlesnake for some climbing. I will be posting a full itinerary in the next couple of days.

ME TOO.... can I get in on this???? :D

OK some more details for you.

DATE: 24th April
TIME: 9:00 am
LOCATION: Mount Nemo Conservation Area
ACTIVITY: Trail work and clean up
BONUSES: Climbing afterwards
ENTRANCE FEES: FREE to participants

We are working on the following.

LUNCH: FREE - A barbeque to be arranged.
TRANSPORT: FREE - A bus to leave MEC, downtown Toronto to Mount Nemo. Shuttle over to Rattlesnake Point for the lunch. We will even give you a FREE ride back to Toronto. Times to be finalized.
BONUSES: Possible freebies. Making climbers look good. Helping the environment. Showing you are a responsible climber.

How else can you help?
Bring your own gloves and workboots.
Cut lunch waste by providing your own camp plate and cup (better for Earth Day than creating disposable plate garbage - Yes?)
Let us know you are attending so we have a head count.
Let us know you want to use the bus. IMPORTANT. We need enough people to commit to the bus to justify booking it.
Spread the word that all climbers are welcome and needed.

The barbeque is being held at Rattlesnake C.A. because of the lack of facilities at Nemo C.A. and to provide top roping opportunities (remember the mandatory TR ban at Nemo) but anyone in their own cars may return to Nemo to lead climb after lunch.

The contact e-mail for the bus or to confirm attendance will be earthdayevent@yahoo.ca

We may at some point open a database to list attendees at the Access Partners group page, we will see.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/accesspartners/

Oh and did I mention we should have some FREE STUFF (TBA)

I think this would be a good opportunity for an RC.com mini-gathering. meet up, clean our local crags, bit of climbing later if time allows...

grant, you mentioned the bus to get out there... what about coming back?

Why take a bus when we can each take out own cars - preferrably SUV's with 7 empty seats and a tank full of gas?

I understood the CN stairclimb was the weekend previous, like the 17th April. That being the case I hope you can make it out for the whole day on the 24th April.

As an added incentive we have a growing number of free giveaways and there is a chance we will have a free rope to include soon. More details to come later.

.......and erm, like kidnapping people might make climbers look bad and be counter-productive. Just brainwash them so they come on their own

The more the merrier and more reason to supply the bus. I know you have already signed up to earthdayevent@yahoo.ca but please send us an update if your friends join us or have them send an e-mail. We will be in touch with arrangements shortly.

It should be a good day and lots of opportunities to ask questions about access from myself and other Access Committee members.
See you there.

Just a reminder to everyone that is planning on attending. Please make sure that you've signed up though the e-mail address. (earthdayevent@yahoo.ca) We need to have an accurate head count in order to get the right amount of food for the barbeque. That being said, we will have a bunch of extra food so if you wake up on the day and decide you join us, we'd love to see you. Further reminders:

- Try to bring a pair of work gloves
- if you have one, a wheel barrow would really help us
- A shovel or two would be benificial.
- The bus is leaving from MEC at 9:00 sharp! If you're taking the bus, try to be there by 0845 to guarantee you won't be left behind. If you not taking the bus and meeting us at Mt. Nemo, we're asking people to meet at the main parking lot at 0900.

I would like thank, on behalf of the Access Committee, all of our sponsors of this event. Mountain Equipment Co-op has been especially generous through the donation of the transportation, loads of freebies including a rope, their staff's time and the MEC board room for Access Committee meetings. Other sponsors include: Beta Clothing, Gregory Packs, Gripped, The Pad Climbing Gym, Static Climbing Equipment and the Alpine Club of Canada.

This event is in support of the Halton Regional Conservation Authority, the Access Committee and, of course, climbers like yourselves who are concerned about keeping access to our crags. We look forward to seeing you all there and to a great day! :D

Crazylikeafawkes: I promise to try avoiding ANYONE getting left behind. :righton:

In addition to the above information and to confirm some of what has already been posted here is something I have been circulating lately.

Earth Day Update

The following info is provided for people attending next weeks Earth Day Event. Please remember that we are co-ordinating things through the earthdayevent@yahoo.ca e-mail so if you haven't confirmed your interest it would help us if you do by Friday.

REMINDERS
Please remember to bring along the following:
Your own work gloves and footwear for the work.
Your own plate and cup, to reduce paper waste, for the barbeque.
Your climbing gear or hiking boots for afterwards.

LUNCH
We will have burgers and hotdogs for everyone along with one or two salads. If anyone wishes to have a veggy burger/veggy dog please let us know in the morning as you arrive. We will have some but by the time the coals are fired up it will be too late if we run out. If anyone wishes to go pot luck on dessert or incidentals such as chips/cookies/etc, I'm sure there will be enough camp 4 wannabee's to chow down on your contributions and it will only serve to make the day better after a morning of work.

GARDEN TOOLS
We have a number of people providing shovels and wheel barrows but if anyone has room for an extra shovel or a lawn rake in the car then bring it along, we may or may not need it.

MAGIC BUS FROM MEC
For those wishing to use the Magic Bus, it is now booked and has plenty of room for friends to join. Please meet the bus at the Mountain Equipment Coop around 8:45am. It is scheduled to depart at 9:00am PROMPT to head to Mt.Nemo. The bus will shuttle people over to the barbeque after the clean up and then people will have a chance to climb. It will depart at 5:30pm to return to Toronto. We decided the slightly later arrival of the bus at Nemo would allow us to get the majority of people started without standing around too long.

EARLY STARTERS
Myself and some of the others on the Access Committee will be arriving early, probably between 8:00-8:30am, so anyone wishing to get a head start is welcome to turn up bright and eager. We plan on rotating people between the trail work and the clean-up so people can work where they see fit without being stuck on a chain-gang although anyone wearing a prison outfit may not have that choice.

OH NO! IT MIGHT RAIN!!!!
In the event of rain we will still continue so bring rain gear if it is looking that way. We have a covered pavillion for the barbeque for such eventualities. If the weather precludes climbing then we can always have the bus return to Toronto early. Such a decision will be made on the day. We realize the possibility of rain will affect the number of people wishing to attend but hope that the nature of the event will encourage people to show rain or sun. Join us and make it a day to remember either way. You're all outdoor folk, we know you have rain gear, we know where you live
The other side of having rain is that if we don't climb afterwards, we can go drink beer or whatever your favourite indulgence is.

PRIZES
We just keep getting more as time goes on. Someone will be walking away with a smile on their face. There is a catch though...... you have to actually turn up and
:::-> work <-::: shock/gasp/horror :shock:
Hang on though, it's not like picking up litter or dodging raindrops is that hard.

SO
I'm looking forward to seeing lots of familiar faces and meeting many new people.
Grant Parkin

We're asking people to be at Nemo for 9:00. The bus will also be leaving from MEC at 9:00. That way we can get people going in shifts so that it isn't too chaotic with the over 100 people are are expected showing up all at once. Anyone else for bringing salads, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes or tarps??? :righton:

yes there is. Especially if you bring one of the requested items. (wheelbarrow, FRS radio, shovel, tarp, rake, etc.) Ok, just kidding, there's free parking and admission for everyone. Although we could still use some more equipment...

Make sure you've all registered with earthdayevent@yahoo.ca

See you on Saturday for a great day!

:righton:

9am??? oh geez. it's a good thing i happen to like this earth place... not much can get me out of bed before 8am on a saturday...

Just your climbing stuff, a pair of work gloves, a water bottle and a plate or something to eat off of.

Earth Day is now in the past and yet here we are on the earth still. Make every day an earth day and then join us at our future Earth Day Events to celebrate how you care for the environment. We just had our latest Earth Day and I have to say that it was without doubt the most successful ever.

On Saturday 24th April 2004, at Mount Nemo Conservation area, 132 climbers, family, and friends gathered to help the Access Committee perform a clean-up and four trail re-routes. Groups were dispatched to various areas to look for trash and other garbage while more groups worked on moving trails where Conservation Halton was concerned about both public safety and providing for regeneration of heavily used sections. Thanks to all the people who brought garden tools, wheelbarrows, tarps, and other equipment, we were able to complete all the trailwork sooner than expected. Efforts were then focused on gathering the trash in one spot at the lookout. It took three pickup truck to transport the trash back down the trail to the parking lot where it was loaded into a large Halton Waste garbage truck. A number of metal items were separated and taken to a metal recycler by Conservation Halton.

The work crews then gathered at Rattlesnake Point where members of the Access Committee provided a barbeque with both meat and vegetarian options. As people finished lunch and enjoyed the beautiful weather they heard from members of the Access Committee about some of the current issues. One of the messages was that it is now up to each and every climber to start being an advocate for their own benefit. The climbing community needs a collective voice and while the Access Committee may be the organization to communicate with land owners, individual climbers need to start voicing to others that not only are climbers a responsible user group, but climbing is a valid, sustainable, activity. It is up to all of us to find the balance of conservation and recreation.

The presentations were then followed by a free draw that had many prizes with the two grand prizes being a pack donated by Gregory and a rope donated by the Mountain Equipment Coop. In fact there were so many prizes that the draw took longer than expected but soon people were heading off to do a few climbs or off to the pub for a well deserved drink to round off the day.

That was not the end for the Access Committee though as we now continue to deal with media interest in our event, providing information and photographs where requested and thank our sponsors who very generously donated equipment, resources, food, prizes, and support. Accordingly I would like to thank and acknowledge the following.

All who participated in the 2004 Earth Day Event.
Ron Kindt and his staff from Conservation Halton.
The Alpine Club of Canada.
The Mountain Equipment Coop.
M & M Meats.
Gregory Packs.
Gripped Magazine.
Urban Voyager.
North Face.
Beta Clothing.
Chris Kuo.
The Pad Climbing Gym.
Brinkmann Instruments.
Outdoors Oriented.
Static Climbing Equipment.
Voortman Cookies.

I would like to make a special acknowlegement to the members of the Access Committee and friends who made this event the resounding success it was. I also offer my apologies to those I kept bugging or called on without notice for favours.

Thank you all.
Grant Parkin

Thanks to grant and the access committee for organizing this. What an amazing turn out! It was like a treasure hunt for garbage, I got a lot of broken glass, and many bottles. Even a pepsi can that looked like it was from the early eighties!

saw those of you who scored tires, and that barbed wire contraption... even the hood of a car...

congratulations to everyone who won prizes!!

Huge thanks to Grant and the rest of the access committee for organizing such a great event not only for the participates but also for showing land owners and conversation authorities that climbers are a mainly response and environmentally sound group of people. The event had an amazing turnout; didn't find any garbage that was that exciting (no retro pop cans or barbed wire  ). Although, one member of our group did find some booty; a #7 nut on the ground a good distance back from the crag. Met some great people and had some good laughs, defiantly looking forward to next year.

Thou I still say that Grant should have come out for a beer after the event.

crazylikeafawkes: Unfortunately not everyone won a prize, someone walked away with MY rope. Now I've been racking my brain (it was pretty well shot by the end of the day though) and as far as I can remember I don't recall seeing you and krillen at the same time. Not even during the BBQ. Any idea why that might be?

ontpebblewrestler: I actually had invites from three groups to go down to the Dickens but I had the irresistable urge to go grab a couple of climbs first. I then ended up at a friends place until after 10:30pm eating pizza and wings. Of course it did take a couple of beers to wash it down. :D

krillen: Nice to see some pics, I never had the time to use my camera. I couldn't see any pics of crazylikeafawkes though :? Didn't you see her?

If anyone has a copy of the Hamilton Spectator from Monday 26th (today) then check out page A8. We may not have been front page material or the only folks to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday but at least we get part of an article over a 1/4 page in size. Not too shabby eh?

Also a more accurate count of numbers including some late arrivals put the count up to 137 people joining us.
What will next year bring? Who knows, it's a year away and everyone has an awful lot of advocating to do first right. Like showing the Spectator article to folks you know for starters. And you don't even have to admit you know the person quoted in the article eh

I will conceed that this was a close one, however not the closest. I made sure to keep my head down whenever passing groups of strangers and keep to my "clique" instead of meeting anyone new. :P I'm confidnet that Fawkes and I can go to many more places without having to meet or speak to each other.

Great turnout guys, and great impression left on the non-climbing community! Let's keep it up all year long on a personal basis! Cart out that garbage!

Cheers
