The closer I get to killing myself, the easier it is to seperate the important things in life from the things that just don't matter. And I like bright, shiny gear and women with big shoulders

Climbing makes me happy. The mental and physical challenge wakes me up. I feel like I'm good at it and that makes me happy. There's a level of excitement and enthusiasm in all my climbing friends that I rarely see in the rest of life. And I feel like no matter how long I climb, there will always be more to try and like I'll never get bored.

because climbing is like a moving meditation. only climbing can make me so focused i am aware of nothing else, as close to stopping the tought process as I have come. It will have to do until I can train my mind to behave better!! but besides all that, climbing is a great sport that involves comaradarie, not beating someone else. climbing keeps me in great shape and it truly uses all the senses. finaly, you can climb all year!!!

For all the wrong reasons, to be sure. Climbing (for me) is self-indulgent, but I don't care. Sometimes I climb to prove myself to myself. Sometimes, I admit, I climb to prove myself to other people. Sometimes I fail give up just to see what it is like to give in to self-doubt...and how the response to an action like this impacts me and my interactions with folks around me. So why do I do it? Because there is something about it that overrides my guilt over self-indulgence, my fear of failure in front of my pears, and the potential for disappointment in myself when I set a goal and fail. Climbing is the alter upon which I sacrifice any and all of my virtues, my pride, my self esteem, my time, and my life. Sometimes a phoenix rises from the ashes. Sometimes not. -Kate.

In reply to: The closer I get to killing myself, the easier it is to seperate the important things in life from the things that just don't matter... Death definitely has something to do with the passion for climbing, especially alpine climbing. The decisions you make when you climb could very well be your last. Life just makes a lot more sense when you climb, than when you live a “normal” life. It's a simple matter of survival.

When I climb, it is a bond between nature and myself. There are other ways to bond with nature, but climbing is my choice. I love rock, air and the thrill of danger. Climbing helps me keep in touch with the natural instincts created in me. Climbing is also a one on one challenge, while using gear allows me to continue another day when nature wins.

While I know "conceously" that I have managed all the risks, "subconceously" I am in fear of my life, therefore I get the adrenaline rush of fight or flight. It is this balancing act of the mind that I enjoy most. Especially when I am 20-30 feet above small Trad pro. There are a myriad of reasons why I climb, but the above is probably the most profound and intense for me. Usually what stands between climbers climbing at or just above their ability is their "lead head", as if it's not screwed on right, many are unwilling to take falls from far above their pro, therefore they do not commit themselves to climb outside of their comfort level. I love to be scared, so climbing through that fear when every nerve is aware is what I enjoy most about climbing. I am not saying one should climb wrecklessly, but if one has managed the risks their is no reason not to climb at or above one's abilities.

Why does a bird fly? Why do people fall in love? Why do some people go to church on Sunday, while others go to a high lonesome place? We do what we were meant to do, what we HAVE to do. I could no more stop climbing than I could stop breathing. (The results would be the same. ) I know this isn't what you're looking for, but some things just defy description and definition. ---Ford--- 'the emptiness within the cup, makes the cup useful.' i'm afraid of climbing. there is the kind of climbing thats done in the beginining, when you go top rope cliffs and climbing gyms and what not- where climbing is super safe. But after that, (if you continue into the realm where you might consider calling yourself a climber) you discover that all of the sudden theres a hightened level of commitment. And theres a new necessity to comprehend your own abilities and limits. A need to critically and objectively evaluate yourself your desires, your abilities, your commitment. And all of the sudden you can't hide anymore every hidden littel corner of yourself is exposed leading near your limit you make difficult decisions- everything going on in your life exits your head. And you're completely immersed in the reality and mortality of the moment. every breath is only breathed for right now and after its all said and done. and you're back on the ground- there is no explanation for why you’ve made the decisions you did- whether you continued, whether you bailed off of the climb, whether you shit your pants or made pacts with god or devil. but you'll remember the climb and how for one brief moment life was primal the very essence of survival desire was quenched - but only brielfly. and you peered into the darkest corners of your soul in hopes of finding an answer to the question of why you are here and why you climb and why you love and why you wake up. and in retro spect you had an answer while you were there, gripped and sweating on that climb. and tomorrow you'll be back on a climb looking for it again

I have been trying to answer this question and has not been easy. Rock climbing gives me that feeling of being alive. Testing my limits in a natural environment is something other activities don’t have. I have always loved outdoors. In nature I feel part of a whole, part of the creation. I can witness the magnificent of the creation. I began to enjoy nature with mountain biking; now I love to rock climb. It has gone into my soul, it’s a need, and it’s an addiction. It’s all about being free and feel alive. Getting to places and doing things that others don’t or wouldn’t go or do. So many times while climbing, camping, or just walking through nature, while I was marveled with all that beauty, that silence, that magic… I really can’t comprehend that people don’t like to be there but I am thankful they don’t because people tend to destroy the beauty in this life and part of the magic resides on the solitude you can experiment out there.

Because I think it's fun! The physical challenge. The mental challenge. The physical effects climbing has had on my body. It's another activity done outdoors. And did I say I think it's FUN!

Some reasons why people climb are ordinary and others are complicated. For some of us, climbing is the tangible paradigm that we wake up with every morning to help understand the angst and appreciate the privileges. It shows how planning at the base can get you through a crux. It shows you how to counterbalance risk. It says that mistakes are a good thing. It numbs you to failure. Now, climbing is not the end-and-be-all method of understanding how to plan, take risks and accept failure. Some of us continue to climb for these reasons, but we probably did not expect this much before starting. More than likely, we stumbled upon it by happenstance. I say we consider ourselves pretty lucky to have done so.

I don't know, but it's kinda funny that people always want you to pull a reason for everything you do out of your butt. Why did you go out last night? Duh, cuz I wanted to?

when i first started out, i climb to be fit. now I want to be fitter to climber better. its an obsession, an addiction and a way of life (outside of work of course ). I like the sense of achievement and calmness when you're in the zone. and its fun!
