Oh oh. I guess there isn't a unique solution to my question, dammit. Haha. Anyway, I'm not THAT old. I'm 48 and started climbing in 79.

Hey, that should have been my third equation--that would have certainly yielded a unique solution:

In a couple months Hillary will be half my age. Hahahaha.

And, a hint to that one could have been:

In two more birthdays Hillary will be the same age as my favorite Scotch. Haha.

My first climb (on a gym wall) was a little over 4 months ago (Feb.13, 2004 actually....). My first real rock climb was April 24th.

I am not telling my age (a chicks prerogative and all), but let's just say I was moved nearly to tears and greatly relieved to know I have plenty of good years of climbing ahead of me when I saw Fred Beckey's photo in Climbing magazine (Lifetime Achievement Award).

I started climbing 6 months ago - I'm 26 (....with a birthday next week, I'm closer to 27). It's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

Curt, you wouldn't be referring to The Macallan 25 year single malt? That is a wonderfully delicious scotch. Ohhh with hints of butterscotch on the nose, and now i'm salivating. I like the peaty ones from Islay as well.

18 years ago -- holy swami belt, hangdog, Fires, I can't believe it's been so long! Selective memory (of unplanned bivouacs, endless approaches and benighted descents, running out of money, running out of gas, running out of water, etc) make it all just one big happy memory so I keep doing it.

I just realized that I've been lying in other posts. I haven't been climbing for 20 years. I've been climbing for 15. Oh well. I started when I was 15. Wait, that would make it 17 years of climbing. Dang! I lost count.

I started out climbing big cotton wood trees and within a few months was climbing outdoors (Taylors Falls/Barn Bluff, Minnesota) barefoot (couldn't afford shoes). I climbed barefoot for 3 years before someone took pity on me and sold me their shoes for a good deal. Then I was the first member at a gym called "Peak Adventure" which then changed to "Footprints" which then changed to "Out of Business" and so I went back to living out of my van next to the crags to get as much climb time as I could. Started to climb competitively and then got married to a non-climber who graciously understood that I liked to climb. She looks good in a swimsuit so I can't complain (which has something to do with "climbing" if ya know what I mean :wink: ).

I started climbing 17 years ago at 19. Joined the Mazams in portland and learned the Oldschool trad methods. Then moved to Salt Lake City a few years later where I learned what sport climbing was all about. I set course at Rockreation climbing gym for a while and climbed the local crags of the Salt Lake and Utah Valley's with frequent road trips to Red Rocks, VRG, Santa Clara, and Rifle. Its been a beautiful life so far. :D

1) How long have I been climbing?
2) How old am I now?
3) What year did I start climbing?

Of course, when you get number (1) number (3) is a give away.

Curt

Um... my god Curt, are you really THAT OLD???

Henseforth, Methusalah is how you shall be known.

You're like 22, right?

But I actually started bouldering at the age of 8 at Deleware Water Gap of all places.

A climber born was I.

I started climbing a little over six years ago. I was 12. Six months after starting in the gym I was outside on some runout "PG13" rated 5.8. I was in love.

Actually, Curt, your question had just one unique answer (the correct one). If you plug the 31/60/73 numbers into your equations, you'll notice the conflict. 15 years ago, you would have been 45, and have been climbing for 16 years. This is one year MORE than 1/3 of your life, not 1 year LESS than 1/3.

Sorry, vegas -- you were wrong :)
(This is usually the part where somebody looks at my math, knocks me on the head, and shows me that I did something wrong)

All that math made my head hurt, and I forgot to say how long I've been climbing. Maybe y'all can help me figure it out (not a math question, just a semantics question).

I started climbing in 1997, and climbed in a gym 3 times a week for a year. Then, I gave it up until September '03 when my wife (who had heard me talk about wanting to climb for 5 years) got me back into it with a membership to the local gym. Now I go once or twice a week, and get outside every 2 weeks.

So, I guess I've got about 1.5 years of "experience" (although I'm still brand new when it comes to all the technique and real experience), but I started climbing 7 years ago.

I'm 29 now.

Started in 1991 at great falls with a thick "tree cutters" rope we "found" on an "abandoned" truck. At least we had actual biners/harness/fig 8.
We eventually borrowed a friends rope once he found out what we were doing. Started leading about 6 months after that and I havent stopped.

[nerd]
x : age
y : years climbing

y( x - 2 ) / 2 = y - 2
( x - 15 ) / 3 - 1 = y - 15

=> ( x - 2 ) / 2 + 2 = ( x - 15 ) / 3 -1 + 15
=> ( x - 2 ) * 3 / 6 - ( x - 15 ) * 2 / 6 = 12
=> ( 3x - 6 - 2x + 30 ) / 6 = 12
=> x + 24 = 72
=> x = 48
=> y = ( x - 2 ) / 2 + 2 = 15

[/nerd]

In reply to:

you are wrong curt, you started climbing in 1989 (2004-15) :lol:

now the second set of equations
In reply to:
In a couple months Hillary will be half my age.
In two more birthdays Hillary will be the same age as my favorite Scotch.
z: age of hillary
s: curts favorite scotch

v: a couple of months (0.1
z + v = ( x + v ) / 2
z + 2 = s

:shock:

back to the thread, i started climbing in 1991. mostly mountain climbing though. i gave many long breaks to rock climbing because of persistent elbow problems, could not find a dedicated partner, keep getting depressed, academics etc etc
