I know that climbing has always been popular with math geeks, but yikes!

Funny, isn't it, how we cling to the myth that climbers are primarily under-educated drifters and romantic-minded dirtbags. If you gathered stats on the median household income level, average level of education, etc. of the weekend crowd at a typical crag, you'd probably find that we're mostly affluent, middle-aged, white-collar nerds.

Except, maybe, in Kentucky.

I pretty much fit the bill, although I'm pretty freakin' cool (if you ask me).

I'm 37 yrs. old, with 22 years of lead climbing experience, and a year of tr-ing before that. I was lucky to meet a family friend who was one of the stronger climbers on the East Coast back when I was a teen.

OK, big deal, you guys can solve simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns, but what about a quadratic equation derived from a constant rate differential equation?

For 10 years, I climbed at a steady rate of 100 days per year.
From that point on, my rate of climbing days per year began to accelerate at 4 days per year squared.
I have now climbed a grand total of 2,950 days.
What year did I start climbing in?

You can elimintate the solution that I started climbing in the future as a physical impossibility. And just because I fabricated easy numeric values, doesn't mean you should attempt trial and error with numbers to find the answer. You must show all work. And no fair asking John Gill how to solve the problem, either.

Edited to correct a numeric error :oops:

I've been climbing since i was little at gyms and camps and stuff like that. I bought my own harnes and shoes in 2001. I've been climbing seriously since then, and about 3 or 4 times a week for the past 10 months. So I'de say three years of real experience.

You figure it out--it'll be fun. Two years ago, I had been climbing for half of my life. Fifteen years ago, I had been climbing for one year less than one third of my life.

[nerd]
x : age
y : years climbing

y( x - 2 ) / 2 = y - 2
( x - 15 ) / 3 - 1 = y - 15

=> ( x - 2 ) / 2 + 2 = ( x - 15 ) / 3 -1 + 15
=> ( x - 2 ) * 3 / 6 - ( x - 15 ) * 2 / 6 = 12
=> ( 3x - 6 - 2x + 30 ) / 6 = 12
=> x + 24 = 72
=> x = 48
=> y = ( x - 2 ) / 2 + 2 = 15

[/nerd]

I'm 48 and started climbing in 79.

you are wrong curt, you started climbing in 1989 (2004-15) :lol:

melekzek,

You screwed up solving for y.

(48 - 2) / 2 + 2 = 25 years of climbing, so 1979 is the year I started climbing. Some nerd you are. Haha. You had me worried--I thought I lost ten years of my life somewhere. :D :D :D

Badass has been climbing hard for 3 years. He is 22 years old. It is all he lives, does, and will ever do.

let t == the the amount of time you've been climbing in years
y== the year you started climbing.
x== t-10

after 10yrs, you've climbed 100x10 = 1000 days
2950 = 1000 + 100x + 1/2(4)x^2
x^2 + 50x - 975 = 0
(x+65)(x-15) = 0
x != -65...that just impossible
.: x = 15
so my guess is you've been climbing for 25yrs.
y = 2004 - 25 = 1979

cudos for making me do math in the off-season! I'm an electrical engineering student, I didn't think i'd see calculus again untill september... :cry:

Proof that math can come in handy on RC.com. Nice to see there's still some education taking place in the education system. :o :)
