I wanna play. I haven't been to a few places that i need to: Summersville Lakes, Gunks, New, City of Rocks, Devil's Tower, the Tetons, Squamish, and Smith. (Hmm . . . when to tick them off . .. when to tick them off . . . )

So, of the things that I've seen, on every climber's list should be:

Tuolumne Meadows
Yosemite Valley
The Red River Gorge (for the scene alone)
Red Rocks
Bishop (bouldering, climbing, whatever, just go)

I also want to toss in something in Utah because I firmly believe that everyone should see the natural parks there. Awesome. Awesome.

From where I've climbed, my picks would be, in order:

1) Gunks
2) Tuolumne / Yosemite
3) JTree
4) The Needles (CA not SD, but I hate the approach :( )
5) Tahqitz / Suicide (I hate that approach too :( )

If I had to keep going to 10:

6) Red Rocks
7) Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons
9) Eldo
10) Any Bishop Area (especially Rock Creek), Devil's Tower, Needles (SD, including Mt Rushmoore nearby), Shelf Road, Arches National Park, Castle Vally, almost any area in NC (especially Shiprock), Mt Magazine (Ar)... I can go on, but I think that's enough. 8^)

Yosemite is one of the few places you can climb in the states without having a car. American public transit sucks.

You've not stayed at Camp 4 I take it.

Eldo is pretty accessible by bus. You may have to hike or hitch a mile or so into the canyon. It's a high traffic area though. You should be able to catch a ride pretty easily. The camping scene is non-existent though. You could stay at the hostel in Boulder.

Oh!! The Gunks! You don't really need a car if you stay at camp slime. There is a bus that runs into town from NYC. You could hitch a ride to the camp again. maybe 3 miles.

A lot of people have mentioned Salt Lake City... Having never been there I'm curious how the "local" climbing is (as in less than a 1 hour drive from downtown). I realize that it is amazingly close to City of Rocks, Moab, Zion/Red Rocks, and even the Valley, but is the local climbing (cottonwoods, maple?, etc) that good? And is it available year-round?

JSJ
My experience was that SLC climbing was pretty unimpressive. it is fairly close though <1hr. You may have a different experience. The climbing is in the canyons too, so it's pretty seasonal but you could probably climb in the sun on a cold day.

2)Gunks
3)Moab
4)Red Rocks
5)Jury's still out, too many great climbing areas to choose from. Zion, JTree, Acadia, Rumney, Eldo, SLC... Nah, I need to see more before deciding on #5.
