Most things I look at talk about ascending a single rope or tying one end to you and ascending the other side. My question is: Say the rope is running over a tree branch and you don't want the rope to slide over the tree's bark. Can you bachman hitch both ropes and ascend them both safely? I have done this up to 10 feet high and appears to be ok.

There are devices made for it that can take two ropes at once, but it seems like you want something a little more ad hoc, no? Any of the commonly-used cord-based friction hitches should work just fine. Sounds like you already have it handled. :)

you might consider anchoring both ends of the rope if you don't want it to slip around the tree branch.

Arborists ascend doubled ropes all of the time. The least complex system is to tie a cord loop using a Klemheist around both ropes and then use a double locking biner to attach to your saddle.
To ascend arbos do what's called a footlock. This is pretty hard to describe. If you're really interested google ought to lead you to a discussion.
One word of CAUTION! You MUST stay below the limb that the rope is doubled over. Stay at least five times the diameter of the limb below. Ex. 5" dia=25" below. If you get closer you risk having the doubled ropes splitting the Klemheist leading to groundfall.

Hmm. I would use a Petzl Reverso and a Backman not or klymheist...

If you use a Petzl Reverso on the auto-locking way you can climb double ropes with it and it isn't very expensive.($ 25, and it's great for belaying)Or if you want a better device, the Petzl Shunt.

I've used the Bachman knot on the few occasions I've needed to go up a doubled rope. I've never had a problem with the Bachman (even on wet ropes). I like it because it's easy to loosen, easy to grab, and I can make it with gear I'm already carrying. As others have mentioned other knots around both ropes will also work.
