Hey folks, I'm just getting into climbing, and I have a bit of a question. Occasionally when I'm climbing, especially on stuff that's hard for me to do, I tend to catch my fingernails on the wall, and it often hurts, or at least bothers me enough to make me flinch and miss the hold. Do other people have this problem, or is it just me? Is it something I'll likely get over as I get better, or should I make a habit of cutting my nails shorter before I go climb? Thanks, Erisson ps: This is all on a gym wall. There's not much climbable natural rock in the swamp.

Yup, cut em short but not too short. If they are too short, it will hurt when you press down on small crimpers

i saw this lady at the grocery store with like 18 inch long nails. They were painted purple. It still makes me shudder to think about it. They were so long her Daughter had to push the grocery cart for her. I stared for a while like a touron, but what does someone expect? She looked like a friggin corpse! peaze frawg

I hate fingernails. The long ones make me want to puke. If I see long nails I always think Im going to see them get ripped out.

i always bit my nails as a kid. i finally kicked the habit, and then got into climbing with my pretty girly long nailed hands. i cut 'em all off! i can't stand them long at all now. can't grip things that well when you climb and you'd hate to catch one and rip it off. ow! so yeah, trim them down before you climb, you'll figure out what length is most comfortable...

Ugh... A friend of mine never cuts her nails before climbing, it makes the most HIDEOUS noise against the rock (think: nails on a chalkboard). Whether I'm climbing or not, I keep 'em cut real short. They just irritate me when they're longer.

cut them. it will be a lot better, besides that terrible noise fingernails make against a rock is mind blowing.

Cut them usually one-two days before you climb.

Climbing is like that line from Fight Club. Its the reason to keep you nails and hair short.

long nails can hamper you ability to grip, plus it sounds terrible agains the rock/wall. plus, if you have super-tight shoes, your toenails may make them too small for you, so keep those trimmed too. my gym has a communal nail cutter chained to a neon orange piece of broom handle if you need a quick trim

cut the toes and fingers. Not too short though...I like mine short, not cut off, and cutting them the day before climbing does kinda help. Short toe nails are good, that way you can decrease the pain from your shoes. They only hurt me if i have long nails.
