DEVIL'S LAKE, OUR FINAL FRONTIER IN CLIMBING IS UNDER ATTACK. THERE IS A BAN IN THE WORKS. IF WE LOSE DEVIL'S LAKE, THEN WE WILL HAVE NO CLIMBING IN WISCONSIN. NO CLIMBING THAT CAN SUPPORT THE SIZE OF CLIMBING COMMUNITY WE HAVE. NO QUALITY ROCK. NOW, CLIMBERS ARE USUALLY PRETTY ECCENTRIC PEOPLE. I KNOW, I AM A CLIMBER AND PRETTY ECCENTRIC MYSELF. THERE IS A HISTORY OF COMPLETE INACTION IN WISCONSIN REGARDING CLIMBING ACCESS. GIBRALTAR ROCK IS A FINE EXAMPLE. OUR LAST LINE OF DEFENSE IS BEING ATTACKED, SO I BEG OF YOU; GET UP OFF YOUR ASS AND GET TO THE MEETING BEING HELD ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16TH (THAT'S NEXT WEEK!) AT 7 PM AT BOULDERS' GYM IN MADISON. I KNOW THAT'S ON A SCHOOL/WORK NIGHT, BUT WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING THIS TIME. THIS WILL NOT JUST "WORK ITSELF OUT". THE MEETING WILL BE WORTH IT. WE NEED YOUR VOICE, YOUR IDEAS, YOUR HELP. SINCERELY, STEPHEN D. SCHAEFGEN VICE PRESIDENT OF WISCONSIN OUTDOOR ACCESS

Stephen- thanks for the beta! Could you give more about the potential ban? Who is proposing it? What type of ban- complete, utter no climbing at all- on alternate tuesdays? only for people who climb under 5.10? Why? There must be a reason why someone wants to ban climbing- what is it? It would be great if you kept updates here. I am moving to chicago this summer and am very interested in keeping access to DL open. thanks aaron

I've been to Devil's Lake once, and it was a great place... Please let us know if we can write letters or send an email to anyone to help preserve the place. I live in KY, so driving up for meetings will be kindof hard;)

I feel for you guys still in the midwest, Sorry this might happen to you. On the other hand I've been to alot of spots in the US to climb and everytime I've been to DL it's been a teenage party on the cliffs. The east bluff being one of the Best/Worst places that I have ever climbed. The routes are superb! The people at the base and top of the cliffs make you want to leave the minute you get there. Whitnessing some of the anchors that people make there only leads one to think, how the fck do ten people at least a year not die here. If that's not enough the East bluff trail on top if a heavily traveled area and dodging rocks that 6 year old kids throw off the rock isin't fun either. Untill 3 months ago I lived in chicago and I would rather travel the extra mileage down to southern illinois to get away from DL. I'm sorry you guys might be losing your crag I really am for the responsible climbers that do climb there. I for one wouldn't really care! The rock and routes there make it a 5 star area to climb the people and what not there make it a choss pile. P.K.

your original post is strangely ambiguous. why don't I see anything to corroborate this on climbingdevilslake.com or climbingcentral.com ? also, Boulders Gym doesn't have anything on their website to suggest they're having a meeting of any relative importance coming up. I tried calling them, but they're closed right now. what gives?

i called the devils lake state park office to inquire about this... and the person i spoke has heard nothing of the sort. she did mention legislation that may affect commercial entities that may potentially affect guiding services, but nothing about a climbing ban. the legislation doesn't affect recreational climbers. she also said that she'll try to find more info... can the original poster possibly provide more info? i'll continue to follow up and hopefully there is nothing to worry about. -=g=-

Boy, what a shame it would be if climbing was banned. Devils lake is a great place to go, especially since there isn't much else around as far as good climbing goes.

After speaking with representatives from the access fund, it has come to light that the original flyer posted in Wildtrail's post was a tactic used by the president of the local climbers association to get local climbers to be pro-active. The vice president who sent it out thought that this was a "real" issue. It is not!!!!!!! There is no proposed ban at Devil's Lake. I hope this clears up any confusion. Please contact the Access Fund, local climbers associations or the Devil's Lake rangers for more information. I am going to lock this thread as this isn't an issue at this point.
