Any thoughts on counter balance hauling.
My friends and i are climbing as a three this autumn in the valley and rather than use a 2:1 we thought a counter balance would be a quick and efficient way to haul the pigs.
any thoughts on what's that safest/best/better way to do this

This has been covered on other aid threads.I think the 2-1 haul(Dr. Pete's method)is the way to go!!!That counter ballance method,can be dangerous,as you are hanging by the teeth of your hauler!!!---Couple years ago,I made an attempt on triple direct,using the counter ballance,3 guy counter ballancing 4 pig's!!!We had the hauler housing backed up,but that would have done us no good if the teeth would have failed!!!We bent the housing on the Rock exotica hauler!!!Ever checked out what the rateing is on the housing of a wall hauler?Not the pulley,the housing.It's a wonder we did not die with that much weight on the housing!!!! Use a Grigri off the master loop of your anchor to belay the person who is the counter-weight and you will reduce the sketch-factor condsiderably.
Also with three, consider an easier alternative to the 2:1...
Have one climber haul as usual and have a second climber with: a pulley, a length of six mil. cord, and an ascender(preferably handleless).
The second climber places an ascender below the primary haul device, as in the 2:1, and this is attached to the cord which is running though the pulley and to the second climbers harness. Now both climbers can exert pull on the bag simultneously.
This is basically the same set-up as the 2:1, sans the extra pulley.
This lets you get the speed of the 1:1 haul while sharing the work considerably!!!

Get a really strong pulley, like the Kong Block. Then, put two guys on jugs on the rope. Stay tied in to another rope with about 30 feet of working slack. This is faster than the 2-1.

Tom's way is the better way.
Wall Haulers should be outlawed in this application. They truly suck.
Kong Block Rolls are hard to find, but worth it.
Practise your systems - versatility is the key.
With very heavy loads, you can have one guy hauling on the 2:1, with the other guy counterbalancing.
Hint: If you are using this system, make sure you are the guy doing the counterbalancing - the "operator" who is on the 2:1 half is doing twice the work!

When you say strong how strong are we talking here, would the Petzl RESCUE
pulley (Working load: 4kN Breaking load: 32kN) do the job?
